My very dear Nadia,
Received your kind note upon my return from Cuba/Venezuela/Boston.
I spent three very tiring weeks in the last city, performing The Rake with students from Boston
University.
It was an immense success, even in the malicious Boston press. The two performances each had
different artists, which made them all the more difficult and trying. The first group was very
good, the second much less so.
I was quite ill afterward with a bad case of colitis and was forced to withdraw from a concert,
though not a particularly interesting one, in Chicago, and return here where I resumed my
customary activities.
You and others mentioned to me the performance of the Cantata in Paris, but without telling me
where or by whom . . . I suppose on the radio? . . . and who were the singers? . . . what was the
reaction?. . .
You also haven’t mentioned how you yourself are doing?
Try to respond to me quickly.
Fond wishes,
I Str.

Tres chere Nadia,

Dear Nadia,
I was happy to have your letter giving me your comments on the performance of [The] Rake at
the Opera Comique.
I received word from Françoise yesterday, and I notice that your impressions were similar. All
the better. At the heart of it, it must be a good performance, but I, like you, deplore that there
were changes [that caused problems] with continuity between scenes. It is precisely what I feared
everywhere and I had finally managed to avoid in the Boston performance.
I have asked Swarzensky, from rue d’Anjou, to send me the press clippings, and I hope he will
do it.
Those who told you I was thrilled with the Boulez article are in all cases quite adept at invention.
In any case I only became aware of it eight days ago, and consequently no one has had the time
to hear about my reactions since, in any case it would suffice to read the middle of page 221 to
be sure I am not at risk of being more charmed by Boulez than he pretends to be by me.
If you have the time, I suggest you also see Souvtchinsky’s article:
Page 21: “. . . the young, contemporary music’s aspirations which are no longer with Stravinsky .
. . ”
Also page 22, note I: “Above all, it is evidently a question of Stravinsky’s great works like Le
Sacre du printemps, Les Noces, Le Rossignol.”
The Salon’s careerism continues!!! . . .
Did you receive my letter? You haven’t told me about the Cantata . . . I would like, however, to
know how they sang and played it and how it was received?
Do not be “lazy”; answer me soon.
While waiting, I send fond wishes,
I. Str.

Chere Nadia,
J’ai ete heureux d’avoir votre lettre m’apportant vos commentaires sur l’execution du Rake a
l’Opera Comique.
I. Str.

Dear Nadia,
We are happy to finally have news from you. Thank you for giving me your comments on The
Rake and the Opéra Comique. I didn’t know that Beydts had died. Who will take over from him?
I had always thought the French version would be the most difficult to stage and, most certainly,
the present translation did not help to overcome these difficulties, but did quite the reverse.
Let’s hope that one day, as you imagine, we will succeed in doing better.
Soulima, back from Urbana, told me that Swarsenski (from Boosey & Hawkes, rue d’Anjou) had
organized a group to present The Rake in the provinces. Is this what you are speaking of in
mentioning Tours?
Great success in Edinburgh—I have received quite a bit of feedback from there.
As for your “request,” as nice as it seems to me, I can only—unfortunately!—respond to you in
the negative, because I am absolutely overrun with work and a surplus of commitments. After
having lost about two months this summer to an operation and getting myself back on my feet, I
have just agreed to write a ballet for Kirstein-Balanchine (New York City Center). I am in the
middle of another project, I have a two-month American tour followed by a two-and-a-half-
month European tour (Rome at Easter, Turin, Switzerland, Germany, England, Lisbon). After
that, I will just have to try to catch up on the work that will have piled up.
So, my dear Nadia, please forgive me and understand.
With an affectionate kiss,
I Str.

Chere Nadia,
Apres
europeenne (Rome a Paques, Turin, Suisse, Allemagne, Angleterre, Lisbonne).
I. Str.

My very dear Nadia —
Thank you for your letter, for having remembered March 2 (not the 3rd) and for the past fifteen
years!
Happy that you are reading my Septet. I conducted its premiere at Dumbarton Oaks. Bob is
conducting it tomorrow in Los Angeles—as for me, I have also conducted a symphonic concert
here. Ask Boosey & Hawkes to send you my new Three Shakespeare Songs, which Bob is also
conducting tomorrow.
I need to be in Rome April 4 and stay there until the 18th, then Turin (Perséphone and the Violin
Concerto), then Lugano*) (radio Monte Carlo) the 27th, then staying with Théodore, then
Cologne and Baden-Baden in May, then London (Royal Philharmonic) May 27, then Lisbon at
the beginning of June, then returning by plane to the U.S.
Is it really possible we will not see one another this time?
Love, kisses,

Nadia dear,
Thank you for your kind letter (June 10). We just arrived (with Milène and André) from Lisbon;
what a flight! As fast as it was calm. I won’t forget the Webern arrangement of the Bach
Ricercare: as soon as I find it, I will have it copied for you.
I understand nothing of what you wrote to me about the Scherzo à la Russe and Lugano, where I
conducted a program of chamber music. You must have heard the broadcast from Rome where I
actually played it in my symphonic concert on April 15, and without cuts of course. The idiotic
cut of the First Trio (the canon with the piano and harp) was made, I suppose, by the
broadcasting station for reasons that I can only guess at; either they were short on time (the cut of
this canon would gain them 1 minute), or they didn’t care for the music of the canon, or, perhaps,
the two reasons together. In any case, I had nothing to do with it.
It was good to see you in London. How did your performance of the Septet go?
Love, kisses,
I Str.

Nadia cherie,
Love, kisses

Carissima Nadia,
Your kind letter gave me great pleasure. Indeed, we’ve been without news from you for a long
time, but, as you say nothing to me about yourself, being full of discretion, I will not ask you
questions and will try to convince myself that everything is following its normal course. It
depends on one question: am I right? Please respond.
We are going to Europe once again this spring, at the end of March this time, because Vera will
have (at the start of April) her first art show (Galleria Obelisco in Rome). Exciting news, isn’t it?
To make this journey work I have arranged a few concerts. So, we fly from NY to Lisbon to
conduct my first concert in Madrid (March 25), from there to Rome (April 6), then Baden-Baden
(April 22), then Lugano (April 28) and Stuttgart (May 3) from where we go to Copenhagen to
take this new SAS Danish airplane from there that as of today flies to Los Angeles (22 hours
through the Arctic). Will we see one another somewhere in Europe? Please respond.
Happy to have your kind remarks about my In Memoriam. I have already recorded it (Columbia),
yes, just a few days before its premiere in concert (conducted by Bob Craft) in Dylan Thomas’s
memory, this piece was played beside unforgettable works by Purcell, Gabrieli, Schütz, and
Bach. Aldous Huxley also very graciously took part in this, paying homage to the great poet. I
will conduct In Memoriam in Rome (probably Cuénod) with my Cantata (probably Laszlo and
Cuénod); the second half of the program will be Oedipus Rex (probably Laszlo and Peter Pears).
It would be too good so see you at this concert!
Love,
I Str.

Carissima Nadia,
question dependant : ai-je raison ? R.S.V.P.
Heureux d’avoir vos bonnes paroles sur mon In Memoriam.
grand poete.

My dear Nadia,
Received your charming letter . . .
I am sorry not to be able to respond to you favorably, but this jury business in Monaco is
completely impossible for me.
I want to stay in Rome for a few days to rest before going directly to Baden-Baden, where I will
have more work than normal because of Rosbaud's absence at the moment.
On the other hand, I look forward to seeing you in Rome, where I will stay as usual at the
Hassler. We will arrive there on March 31.
All my congratulations on fifty years of teaching . . . What an important number!
I, who am older than you, cannot say the same, because my career as a composer started in 1907
with my first Symphony and my Suite for Voice and Orchestra, Le Faune et la Bergère, for
which Rimsky arranged a performance in the Imperial Court.
See you soon,
Fond and affectionate wishes,
Love,
I. Str.

Chere Nadia,
Votre charmante lettre recue…
A bientôt,
Je vous embrasse bien affectueusement,
Love
I. Str.

My dear, dear Nadia,
Here is a response to your letter of December 7.
1) Tell Felix Passerone that it is not a question of my permission (I give it to him with pleasure)
but that of Boosey & Hawkes’s (Dr. E. Roth in London) which causes me to advise him against
keeping the anonymity of the source (because he writes to me: . . . “these ‘rhythms’ are taken
from the repertoire without indication of the source”). It would be more prudent to guarantee an
OK from B&H themselves.
2) Despite your hesitations, I hope all the same to see you in Rome or elsewhere in Europe.
Love,
I. Str.

Chere, chere Nadia,
Love,
I. Str.

My very dear Nadia,
Thank you for your letters of January 27 which I found upon returning home from a concert tour
here . . . besides that, I am now starting my preparations for our trip to Europe next month
(leaving from here March 4).
Regarding projects with Venice, I believe Nabokov is a bit too wrapped up in his own
enthusiasm. The fact is that ten months ago the Venice Biennale submitted a project to me to
compose a religious work for them (they wanted [it for] 1956) that would be performed for the
first time under my direction at St Mark's Cathedral. Personally, I am very interested in this, but
nothing will get done or even get started so long as I have not received and signed the contract
with the Biennale.
The misfortune is precisely that this contract is dragging and is making me wait indefinitely.
I proposed a short “Passion according to Saint Mark” which pleased them greatly.
But as for me, as the Unions here say: “No contract, no work” . . .
We hope to see you somewhere during our European stay.
Love,
I. Str.

Bien chere Nadia,
But pour moi aussi, comme les Unions disent ici : « No contract, no work »….
Love,
I. Str.
