April 14, 1960
Very dear Nadia, Happy Easter. Your note touched me greatly.
Very busy: composition, treatments for my blood and my arteries (protection against new
surprises!?), concert here (Mass and Noces in June), conducting there (Oedipus in Santa Fe in
July), then we fly to South America for a concert tour (sharing the program with Bob), Mexico,
Bogota, Lima, Santiago, Buenos [Aires], Rio, Caracas, from August 1 to September 17. Then to
Venice where Bob and I will be conducting at the Biennale, half and half, on September 26.
We’re publishing the second volume of our conversations with Bob under the title of Memories
and Commentaries. This volume is dedicated to you.
With all my love,
Write always—I’ll be here until the beginning of July.

Easter has nearly arrived now—it seems to me that I haven’t written to you in a very long time,
my dear Igor, and yet I miss you more than I know how to say. But, in truth, I am slightly afraid
of inflicting on you a useless letter full of my effusions—and what’s more, I know how to listen
to you without daring to speak to you. Perhaps because I admire you so much, I am acting silly.
A lot of disappointing concerts this winter—with many of the attempts showing both
powerlessness and self-confidence at the same time. Out of clumsy hands and weak minds came
a bunch of derivative, inadequate tricks and stuff. But it would only take one work and one will
to put everything back in order.
You cannot imagine how angry I was at myself for not written to you at the start of March—that
month which is marked by such real pain for you.
I know, I know that the years change the outward appearance of what we allow to be seen, but
the wounds never close.
Her photograph is here, near to me—the light given off by her being will never be
extinguished—and . . . I know that She always prays for us.
I send my love and miss, more than you can know, the times which are now so far away, and
during which we were so close. Yet what seems to have changed has not changed the essential
[the essence of our bond]. And then, you are—and that is enough. With all my heart,
Your
Nadia
[P.S.] Best wishes for the household.

March 2, 1959
Dear Théodore,
It was on the 2nd of March that I learned about the death of your Mother. [This year] I wrote
your Father a little in advance to be sure to be close to him. His response was the most moving
testament that could possibly bring us together around a dear memory.
I revered, I revere your Mother—thanks to you, her image is before my eyes always.
Lovingly, I am yours,

Dear Friend,
What offensive absurdity! But is Gavoty worth worrying about? Accept the attached letter. The
boy who wrote it was sick about what happened on Friday. He is good and he has talent.
1. Would you allow your name to be put forth to the Committee for Father Desobry?
2. Would you allow Charles Leirens to come and take a photo of you? He takes very beautiful
pictures.
I’m of course sad not to have seen you, and now it’s too late. But I love you even though I
cannot see you.
To you both,
Nadia B

Cher Ami,
L’absurdité est offensante ! Mais Gavotry vaut-il qu’on s’indigne ? Accueillez la lettre
jointe.
Nadia B

Dear Igor, Dear Vera,
I’ll arrive in Venice with such joy! Read the score to Threni—daren’t speak of it—what words
would I use to describe such extraordinary pages? Understand everything that my silence
contains.
Leave tonight for Bucharest. Hope to arrive in Venice at the Bauer Grunwald on the 19th. To tell
you of my joy and my impatience is impossible. I love you so and want you to know everything I
cannot express!
Until the 19th, God willing,
I am your,

Thank you, thank you, dear Nadia, for your letter—I am very appreciative, believe me.
We are going to Venice (certainly to Bauer) on July 29, embarking for New York on board the
Cristoforo Colombo (which hit a whale between Genoa and Naples very recently). Threni (or
Lamentations after the Vulgate) upon which the composition touches near the end, will be
performed at the Scuola San Rocco under my direction around September 20; then I conduct
Oedipus and Le Sacre and on Sept 24 I leave with my whole ensemble for Switzerland, where I
am conducting Threni from Sept 25 to 29 in Geneva, Berne, Bâle, and Zurich. As for the desired
allocation for the Lili Boulanger Fund: OK.
Poor Marie-Blanche. I am thinking of her and I sympathize with your grief because I know you
were great friends.
I have as well just learned of a death that has greatly affected me—that of Alexandre Piovesan of
the Venice Biennale, he couldn’t have been more than forty years old!
Affectionately yours,
I. Stravinsky

I. Stravinsky
