You are going to spend a few hours in Paris, my dears, and I am stuck here in this clinic. What
can I say? The inevitability of the situation makes me so deeply sad.
I send my love and am with all my heart your
Nadia B.
Many prayers to God for you, you fight with such immense courage, but this does not surprise
me. May He grant you His Saintly protection.
[P.S.] Just now, Théodore, whom I called, relayed to me what Dr. Gilbert said. I am delighted the
concert in Rome was so beautiful. I hope that you thought so and were satisfied in spite of
everything.

Your distressing letter affected me so painfully. All that is happening at the moment is
unbearably heartbreaking, and we would like to think it untrue. I am with you with all my heart,
in prayer for him and for those capable of such an act. May God have pity on their misery. We
cannot.
Lovingly yours,
Nadia

Cher Théodore,
Votre bouleversante lettre m’atteint bien douloureusement.

Very touched, dear Nadia, by your letter for me of June 18—thank you!
We leave tomorrow to conduct a concert on June 13 in Red-Rocks, close to Denver. The 14th we
fly to New York and then on to London on the 15th where for two weeks I am recording my
R[ake’s] Progress with Columbia. The 28th or the 29th I’ll conduct my Bach Variations and my
Symph. of Psalms at Oxford (Bach Society)—then back to U.S.A. I just wanted you to be up to
date on our plans as much as possible.

everything. This year (with so many trips), composing, the house (we are not selling the one
where we live. I like it too much—it's been twenty-four years!).

Easter has nearly arrived now—it seems to me that I haven’t written to you in a very long time,
my dear Igor, and yet I miss you more than I know how to say. But, in truth, I am slightly afraid
of inflicting on you a useless letter full of my effusions—and what’s more, I know how to listen
to you without daring to speak to you. Perhaps because I admire you so much, I am acting silly.
A lot of disappointing concerts this winter—with many of the attempts showing both
powerlessness and self-confidence at the same time. Out of clumsy hands and weak minds came
a bunch of derivative, inadequate tricks and stuff. But it would only take one work and one will
to put everything back in order.
You cannot imagine how angry I was at myself for not written to you at the start of March—that
month which is marked by such real pain for you.
I know, I know that the years change the outward appearance of what we allow to be seen, but
the wounds never close.
Her photograph is here, near to me—the light given off by her being will never be
extinguished—and . . . I know that She always prays for us.
I send my love and miss, more than you can know, the times which are now so far away, and
during which we were so close. Yet what seems to have changed has not changed the essential
[the essence of our bond]. And then, you are—and that is enough. With all my heart,
Your
Nadia

My Dear,
No time to write to you properly. Excuse me.
1) Variations dedicated to the memory of Aldous Huxley has nothing to do with his work. The
months that this composition took me [to write] were the months when dear Aldous left us
(throat cancer) and it was only natural that I dedicated this work to his memory. Of the rest, I am
certain (and this does not discourage me) that this music would mean nothing to him (or would
displease him) because what he liked was romantic and classical music, to which my
composition is very much foreign.
2) I am no longer going to give concerts in Paris after the public’s and the press’s affront at the
premiere of my Threni, conducted by myself in one of Boulez's concerts. This decision is final.
3) Moreover, let’s not forget that André Malraux—who (very naturally) is organizing an official
event for the centenary of the great Baudelaire—had said not long ago that he considers music to
be a secondary art. It would thus be ridiculous to impose on him (Minister of Public Instruction)
pieces of a secondary art on such an important occasion.
Those are the three things I wanted to say to you in response to your kind letter of December 4.
Despite this “business” letter, I wish to underscore my friendship and best wishes, with which
you are already familiar.
Yours,
I Str.
P.S. Very touched by your letter in memory of my dear little girl.

Chere,
Pas de temps pour vous ecrire convenablement. Excusez.

A letter from Figaro deeply disappointed me, “The article is too long,” they say. I asked them to
send it back to me, and as soon as I return to Paris, I will take care of its publication. I believe the
performance of the Mass will work itself out one of these days, it has to, but . . . I want to hope.
I never leave you!

My dear Nadia,
This is to tell you I received your letter of April 16 and as always—no time for letters.
Boulez made an excellent impression on all of us: a musician of the first order, highly intelligent,
he has good manners and is probably a generous man. His Marteau sans maître, which he
conducted so well here, is an admirably well-ordered score, in spite of all the auditory and visual
complications (counterpoint, rhythm, tempo). Without being too familiar with Boulez's music, I
find it, frankly, preferable to many other things from his generation.
I never received the microfilm (Isaak-Webern) that you had promised me from George Sachs
who was supposed to come to the United States this Easter. We haven't heard anything about it.
Just spoke with Nica Nabokov who will have returned to Paris when you read these lines.
Telephone him to get the latest news.
Please respond.
Love,
I. Str

Chere Nadia,
