April 14, 1960
Very dear Nadia, Happy Easter. Your note touched me greatly.
Very busy: composition, treatments for my blood and my arteries (protection against new
surprises!?), concert here (Mass and Noces in June), conducting there (Oedipus in Santa Fe in
July), then we fly to South America for a concert tour (sharing the program with Bob), Mexico,
Bogota, Lima, Santiago, Buenos [Aires], Rio, Caracas, from August 1 to September 17. Then to
Venice where Bob and I will be conducting at the Biennale, half and half, on September 26.
We’re publishing the second volume of our conversations with Bob under the title of Memories
and Commentaries. This volume is dedicated to you.
With all my love,
Write always—I’ll be here until the beginning of July.

My very dear Nadia,
I was deeply touched by your affectionate message and send you all my love.
I’ve finished (we are in the process of correcting the proofs in London) the composition for
Sacher (Basel*)—a sort of cantata (alto, tenor, choral, orch., and a narrator): A Sermon, a
Narrative, and a Prayer and have put myself to work on “Flood.” That one will be good to
compose.
Good health for the moment. Beginning March in Mexico (for ten days—Easter), where I am
conducting The Rite and Vera will have an exhibition of her gorgeous paintings.
Heartfelt wishes,
Yours,
I Str.
[P.S.] In July in Santa Fe—conducting Oedipus and Perséphone. End of August–September we
are planning to go to Australia with Bob. October in Berlin with Santa Fe Opera, with Radio
Brussels and BBC in London.

Very touched, dear Nadia, by your letter for me of June 18—thank you!
We leave tomorrow to conduct a concert on June 13 in Red-Rocks, close to Denver. The 14th we
fly to New York and then on to London on the 15th where for two weeks I am recording my
R[ake’s] Progress with Columbia. The 28th or the 29th I’ll conduct my Bach Variations and my
Symph. of Psalms at Oxford (Bach Society)—then back to U.S.A. I just wanted you to be up to
date on our plans as much as possible.

[P.S.] We bought the Baroness of Erlanger’s house. Immense amount of work to repair
everything. This year (with so many trips), composing, the house (we are not selling the one
where we live. I like it too much—it's been twenty-four years!).

My very dear Nadia,
Thank you for your affectionate letter—don't worry about me: I am doing very well and I think
Nabokov misinformed you: a month ago in London I had an ear infection and the doctors
advised me not to fly too often, which is why I was thinking of canceling my concerts in Israel
and in Berlin (end of August-September). But having learned that Israel was basing its entire
season on my appearances and that they were already sold out (charity [events for] clinics,
hospitals) I decided to fly there, but not to Berlin. A desolate Nabokov telephoned me from Paris
asking me to come to Berlin as well. With great regret, I refused, not wanting to risk this flight as
well. That's all. Certainly hundreds of letters and telegrams have arrived from everywhere
wishing me a swift recovery and it is certainly more than doubtful that the newspapers are
correcting these false declarations since these latest ones don’t constitute the sensation that they
are looking for [so as] to sell [issues]. After Israel (a concert in Jerusalem and two in Caesarea)
two days in Rome (end of August) two days in New York and then Hollywood where we have
bought and are renovating, furnishing, and organizing the late Catherine d’Erlanger’s house for
us to live in. We will put Bob Craft in the old house (who is conducting Lulu in Santa Fe these
days and will meet up with us in New York to fly to Israel).
Thank you again for having written to me—am very touched.

Nadia, tres chere,
Nabokov desole me telephonne de Paris me suppliant de venir a
