Attached are some errors identified after having sent you the first pages of the third part of the
Concerto. I hope that this package reached you and that you sent back a copy.
I am sending you today (on the SS Aquitania that only leaves on the 13th—no ship before then)
the final pages of the movement. So now you have the entirety and I hope you’ll have the time
(too short, in my opinion) to finish the copying and to rehearse it with the musicians. All the
same, what madness to move ahead the date (May 1!) so suddenly without finding out if it would
be physically possible to have the time for the copying and the rehearsals. It was just discovered
that my manuscript was with the engraver, Schott, who sent it back April 9 (the SS Deutschland
left on the 8th—think of the bad luck, and no ship until the 13th) with the final pages (*) that I’ll
send you after tomorrow.
Yours,
I Str.

I Str.

Very dear friend,
Thank you with all my heart for the trouble you have taken with this, and please kindly forgive
the haste of my responses.
Attached are the blue pages with my answers written beside them in the margins.
As for the first two questions of your letter—(1) indication of the Psalm numbers and (2) the use
of men’s and children’s voices, and in their absence, women’s voices in the composition—it is
completely essential to include this in the piano/vocal reduction. For the rest, if I remember, I’ve
already spoken to Païchadze about the matter. But my memory fails me to such a point [I have
even forgotten what my Symphonie de psaumes is called] that I can’t seem to remember anything
anymore! It’s becoming terrible.
Please believe in my loyal friendship and my infinite thanks,
Your
Igor Strawinsky

terrible
Croyez à ma fidèle amitié et à ma reconnaissance infinie.
Votre
Igor Strawinsky

Dear Friend,
It is not because of negligence, but out of respect for your work that I have not responded—given
the circumstances, I thought that the only reasonable solution would be to send you the proofs:
they arrived today at the same time as your letter.
Unfortunately, I’m leaving for Fontainebleau. They will be corrected. No, I will send you as
early as today the exemplar Païchadze returned to me. Would you please answer my questions as
soon as you can, on this exemplar, and I will transfer them to the proofs.
(I hope that you still have my little list.)
I am sorry at the thought of annoying you with all this, but though there are several cases where
I’m not afraid to take “responsibility,” there are also two or three spots where you alone can
decide.
Need I tell you what a place you hold here in all our minds and hearts? Unbeknownst to you, you
are constantly present through your work. You have managed to inspire such affection that is, I
believe, only equaled by the admiration we have for you. And so . . .
Our very faithful thoughts surround you.
To you, Dear, Great Friend, all we have that is the most sincere and profound,
Nadia Boulanger

Cher Ami,
Nadia Boulanger

My dear friend,
Thank you for your affectionate note that I received for Easter. Mother and I thank you with all
our hearts.
We were able to exchange telegrams with our travelers Easter Sunday and I also received three
letters. Now we need to wait for their arrival in Rio, from where they will write to me. So far the
sea is very calm and their trip has been enjoyable and very restful. I am sure this long crossing
will be good for the two of them. I hope these two months will go by very quickly for them and
maybe for me as well, and that God will grant me progress in my recuperation, so that I will be
refreshed for the arrival of my husband and for Théodore’s wedding. I don't know if Nini will
come back with his father or he will stay for his own concerts.
I hope, dear friend, that the calm of your country house has been a great rest for you, which you
certainly need.
Thinking affectionately of you,

Very Dear Nadia,
Tomorrow the Europa will leave from Cherbourg, bringing you this note along with the music
that Strecker placed on board in Bremen (with a letter for you). This music (complete parts for
the Concerto in E-flat) will be sent in rolls (three, if I’m not mistaken) by mail and . . . Strecker
hopes that there will not be any difficulties with customs that could slow the arrival of this music
in time for rehearsals—something which would be truly dreadful.
In my first letter to you (of April 6), I had asked if you had seen Mrs. Bliss and if you had spoken
to her on the subject of our last meeting here—which is to say the question of the second and
final payment. You never responded (I can only imagine everything you have going on inside
your head!). If you think of it, would you be so kind as to speak with her about it to speed up the
payment, which would do me a great service (especially now—God knows what the sickness of
my daughter and wife are costing me).
I impatiently await news of rehearsals and of the scores, if they arrive in time.
Fondly,
Your

reconnaissants.

My very dear Mademoiselle,
It is certainly much too late to wish you a Happy New Year. All the same, I wish you all the
happiness and health possible for the fifty weeks to come, as well as to Madame Boulanger,
while apologizing for my tardiness. It is because I recently had concerts in Switzerland from
which I have just returned for the holidays. We were profoundly touched by your good thoughts
and we thank you wholeheartedly.
I must come to Paris for the 25th, and on the 26th (it’s a Wednesday) rue Ballu? I have a lesson
with M. Philipp at 5 o' clock. I hope to see you again a little after 6 o’clock. If not, I will
telephone you, because I would so much like to see you again.
In this hope, please always remember, my dear Mademoiselle, my most grateful and respectful
affection,
