January 22, 1952
My dear Nadia,
Thank you for your affectionate letter (of January 17).
You did well in keeping a copy of the little chorale for yourself, because one of the two was in
fact intended for you, the other for you to give to Gavoty at Le Figaro, which you have surely
done.
I am happy and reassured to know you have finally received the three volumes of The Rake
(photocopy of my summary sketches).
Do you know a professor (I do not know of what) by the name of Leon Oleggini? I recently
received a letter from the editors Maurice and Pierre Foetisch, of Lausanne, telling me that they
had bought the manuscript of a book written about me by this gentleman. They asked me to
supply them with photos to illustrate the book that they propose to publish with a catalogue of
my works!!! I calmed them down, knowing neither the author nor the book and not having the
time to dedicate to them. But on the other hand, I am in the process of making, on my own, and
little by little, a complete (and, for the first time, exact) catalogue of my complete works.
Nabokov tells me that they, in principle, agree I may conduct The Rake at the opera, but that
Lehmann cannot decide anything for three weeks. On the other hand, Dr. Roth writes me from
London that Bondeville is managing the opera. Ultimately, I do not understand who is in charge
of whom or what. Nabokov pointed out to me new singers that I of course do not know: Janine
Michaud (Anne), Roger Bourdin (Shadow). Do you know them?
Have you seen the French translation? If so, what do you think of it?
Be an angel and respond to me as quickly as possible, it would be a pleasure to hear from you.
Love,
I Str.

Chere Nadia,
Michaud (Anne), Roger Bourdin (Shadow).
Love,
I Str.

Dear Dr. Roth,
I have just received a letter from Nadia Boulanger whom I had asked to give me her opinion
about the French translation of the Rake’s.
Her answer is not too cheerful.
I understand that the French translation by this Mr. de Badet (by the way I have never understood
who commissioned him: you or the Grand Opéra?) in many instances is completely off and, still
worse, has led to some musical changes which completely erase the original rhythmical sense.
I know that some alterations are unavoidable but the result must not be complete nonsense, as the
case seems to be.
Please contact Miss Boulanger and ask her to handle the problem of straightening out the
mistakes herself. I cannot do it from here; time is running short and moreover Miss Boulanger is
at hand and perfectly aware of the situation. Till Monday, February 18th, she will be lecturing on
the Rake’s at the Monaco Palace, Principality of Monaco. Thereafter she will go back to her
regular address, 36 rue Ballu, Paris 9ème.

My dear Nadia,
I was quite disappointed to learn the results of your investigation at rue d’Anjou concerning the
French version of The Rake. I would like to believe that it is not a complete catastrophe but
limited to a few places.
I just wrote to Dr. Roth to ask him to get in touch with you immediately to place you in charge of
putting all this in order. Otherwise, I do not know who to contact and you are in a position to
choose someone competent in the matter. As for myself, I am too far away and don't have the
time.
Keep me up to date about what comes of this.
Tell me as well for which audience you gave your lectures about The Rake to in Monaco.
Still no decision from the Paris Opera. But the programs that have already arrived here announce
a heap of Strauss operas and The Rake isn't mentioned in them . . .
Fond wishes,
I Str.

Chere Nadia,

Dear friend,
Thank you for your letter of February 7 which cleared up the confusion surrounding the question
of the volumes of The Rake's Progress for me.
No matter what the origin of one or the other, the reality is that the two volumes that
Mademoiselle Boulanger has already received from you are not those I had intended for her. In
this case, I ask you to please send Mademoiselle Boulanger, 36 rue Ballu, Paris, 9e, the three
volumes that you still have at my disposal in your archives.
Thank you in advance and excuse the inconvenience.

My dear Nadia,
A final note to respond to your letter of April 9.
We are leaving New York on Monday April 28 at 5:00 p.m. with TWA Flight 922. We have a
short stop at the Paris-Orly airfield on Tuesday, April 29 around 1:25 p.m. and continue on the
same airplane to Geneva, to attend performances of The Rake in French on May 2 and 4. We will
then return to Paris on May 8.
As for the small reception after Oedipus Rex, I cannot answer from here. We will need to talk
about this again in Paris and see how everything looks then.
Regarding The Rake, I do not know if, in the end, we will put it on in Paris in May. After what
happened to poor Désormière, it seems doubtful. But you must have known about this sooner
than I.
Fond wishes. “See you soon,”

Chere Nadia,
au pauvre Desormieres cela me parait douteux.
« A bientôt ».

Thank you also for having sent me the many signatures of your students and their (your) kind

Boulanger to Stravinsky
36 rue Ballu
March 28, 1952
Dear Igor,
Pardon me, but Dr. Roth has taken the score back and made arrangements for Badet and
Désormière to do the translations. God willing they will succeed. Some passages are good, but
there are so many things to redo. After having studied the question quite closely and assessing
the difficulties, François V. had arrived at the conclusion that a good result was possible.
Fond wishes,
N.B.

Cher Igor,
N.B.
