Boulanger to Stravinsky
36 rue Ballu
December 20, 1957
Love, wishes, expectations, gratitude, finally a couple of words to say to you, Dear Igor—Happy
Christmas.
Read your questions and responses (those which appeared). What an ingenious and useful idea
because even without good faith, one is obliged to think, to search, and the effort brings about
better understanding. At least, let’s hope.
I send you my wishes, I love you with all my heart and thank you. All best wishes to Bob,
Nadia B.

Boulanger to Théodore Strawinsky
September 8, 1957
Hotel du Golf Chalet at Goblet
To be so close—and so far—I have arrived here, overcome by the tyranny of sleep—I am
regaining my spirits—I’ll see you upon my return from Villars, where I’m going to spend five
days with the Markevitch family. But if you could send me the addresses of your Father before
[he leaves Europe], you would make me very happy, as I must thank him. His writing seems to
show he is doing well. To think that he passed by Ballu and I was in Fontainebleau—never
suspecting that I was missing out on such a great joy!
To Denise and to you, dear Théodore, from my heart,

Boulanger to Stravinsky
36 rue Ballu
May 16, 1957
Finally found someone, Dear Friend, to bring you your microfilm that I didn’t dare trust to the
mail service. The young Jean-Pierre Marty, a real musician, is leaving tomorrow for N.Y. From
there he’ll deliver it to you by air to save time. When he arrives in Los Angeles he will ensure
that everything is in order. If, by chance, you could see him for a moment, it would be such a
great joy for him. He deserves it, but only if it doesn’t bother you.
What you said about Boulez makes me happy—he is serious. He is a good musician, and there
are no tricks or bluffs. He was so happy to have seen you.
I am overwhelmed by Marie-Blanche’s slow agony. Operated on two months ago, she is in the
most alarming state. We expect her death at any time, yet something inside of her is so strong
that she is still alive this morning. What sorrow.
Fond wishes and deep affection,
Yours,
Nadia

Votre,
Nadia

May 12, 1957
My dear Nadia,
This is to tell you I received your letter of April 16 and as always—no time for letters.
Boulez made an excellent impression on all of us: a musician of the first order, highly intelligent,
he has good manners and is probably a generous man. His Marteau sans maître, which he
conducted so well here, is an admirably well-ordered score, in spite of all the auditory and visual
complications (counterpoint, rhythm, tempo). Without being too familiar with Boulez's music, I
find it, frankly, preferable to many other things from his generation.
I never received the microfilm (Isaak-Webern) that you had promised me from George Sachs
who was supposed to come to the United States this Easter. We haven't heard anything about it.
Just spoke with Nica Nabokov who will have returned to Paris when you read these lines.
Telephone him to get the latest news.
Please respond.
Love,
I. Str

Chere Nadia,
R.S.P [sic]
Love,
I. Str

Always happy to have a short note from you, if only to ask me to support your students' access to

It is, of course, OK for the Hindu and the Dane
How are you doing?
Here everything is, for the moment, following its normal course.
Have you photographed the microfilms I sent with Bob in November for you [?]* If yes—be an
angel and send them back to me with someone who’s on their way to the United States. This film
is very, very difficult to obtain, and I would like to make some reproductions here.
My most affectionate wishes, my dear Nadia,
