My Friend,
I believe you would have been touched to see how attentively and precisely our students
prepared your Mass. This is a group of young people who really know your work by heart.
The performance they gave was so clean, so sober, and so comprehensive. Among others, we
have worked on Dumbarton Oaks, the Symphonie, Deux Psaumes [sic], the Canticum Sacrum,
The Flood; you know what these works represent for me. It does one good to see young people
understanding works of such importance.
I send all my love and am always your,

Boulanger to Théodore Strawinsky
[September 20, 1969]
Dear Théodore,
How I think of you! Your Father’s tragedy is still here, yet already absent. And is he aware of
this, does he suffer, what relief does he receive from the only relief possible? Such anguish in
these questions. And the Almighty, is He believed in, recognized? Our hearts are linked, my
prayers joined to yours in the faith and mercy of God.
To Denise and you in deepest commitment,
Nadia B.
P.S. Hope you can read this, my eyes are dying, sorry.

Tant
d’angoisse dans ces questions. Et l’impuissance, croit-on là-bas, le verrait-on ? En union

My dear and great Friend,
A single line from your letter tells us what you think, but what you tell us about it overwhelms
us…and you wrote to us by hand! Thank you from the bottom of my heart! You understand the
tragedy of the situation. When I wanted to go see my dear Father on June 18 for his birthday
after his operation (double operation) in New York, I received a response from Vera asking me
not to come for the moment . . . I don’t want to add any commentary, but you can imagine my
pain. My dear Father can no longer react, but he is perfectly aware of it and suffers profoundly
from it, that I know. I am close to him through prayer—with you, dear Nadia, we are close to
him, but [only] through prayer—and I thank you from the bottom of my heart that I can write
these lines to you.
Denise and I express to you our deepest commitment.

My very dear Nadia,
Thank you, thank you for your note and for your unfailing friendship toward my father and us.
Yes, the problems that are cropping up are so painful, and, as you say, critical in any plans, but
what and how should I feel when all access toward my father has been virtually blocked?! What
a tragedy, foremost for him, but also for us, his children . . . In such a situation we are powerless,
because what can we do that won’t provoke too much of a painful shock for him, even though I
know his deepest thoughts.
I have just received a heartbreaking letter from Milène. The poor girl has front row seats to this
tragedy. They are in New York (I mean my father) and plan to go to Paris around the 15th of this
month. Here is Milène’s address:

Dear Nadia,
Got home the day before yesterday from New York where I spent two weeks—I don’t wish to let
the days pass without writing to you, my dear Friend, at least a few lines, to open my very heavy
heart.
The state of my very old and dear Father distressed me: he is so fragile! They say he is doing
better—yes, better than June when it seemed his days were numbered. Let us join our prayers so
he might at least be spared the pain and sadness not caused by his physical state, alas! . . .
Physically, he is suffering a lot, mostly because of how terribly thin he is. Yet, he eats well
enough and happily. With regard to his morale, he seems immersed in his own impenetrable
world and [then], suddenly, will offer a reflection that denotes a certain mental lucidity, but these
instances are rare and brief. He says himself, for example, that he is conscious of no longer being
able to coordinate things in his head. He dozes or sleeps a large part of the day. The only
pleasure that remains to him—and this is deeply moving—is to listen to music. So, we played
him records. It’s very poignant to see him listening while following the score. With regard to the
atmosphere surrounding him, you know yourself, dear Nadia, how heavy, painful, and troubled it
is. My only consolation was to see how admirably well he is taken care of, insofar as the nurses
who surround him day and night (there are four) are perfect in kindness and attention. This Vera
knew how to successfully arrange for him, and I’m grateful to her. We would so like to come to
Paris and hear your news and talk about everything that is important to you, but I don’t believe it
will be possible before the end of January. I send my love.
Yours faithfully and wholeheartedly,

On dit
Alors on lui
