you and Denise. Such drama has played out in this long and terrible battle,

Dear Théodore,
There is nothing to say to your letter, and yet everything to say to you.
We are “revolted” by some facts, which will basically disappear very quickly; and we hold on to

Today we are going to sing “Ave Maria,” “Pater [Noster]” and “Pastorale,” and we have no
doubt that everything else holds no weight next to this music of such spiritual and musical
importance.
I am thinking of you, of Denise, and am, with all my heart, your

Dear Mademoiselle,
It’s already been two weeks since I ought to have answered your very kind letter that brought me
once again an account of the pain we have suffered over the course of this past year that just
came to a close. Telling you how much Denise and I are touched by your friendship is useless;
you already know. Thank you with all my heart. As we enter 1940, let me offer you the greetings
we all send one another, to which I add much more personal wishes for you, for your health, and
for your very precious work.
Allow me, dear Mademoiselle, to send you my love and my deepest and most faithful friendship,

Dear Nadia,
I was so happy to hear your voice at the other end of the line the other day, but very upset to hear
that you would be entering a clinic. Even when the operation is nothing serious, it’s always
bothersome to undergo anaesthesia [and] we hope you are now free of the effects . . . and we
would be happy to have a little note to reassure us.
I don’t need to tell you how sad I was to see my father leave, or more exactly to know he
returned to America in less than perfect health (despite a . . . [illegibile] improvement) and the
distance that will separate us can do nothing but add to our anxiety and our worry . . . And no
one to watch over him.
I will have an exhibition at André Weil’s, on Matignon Avenue during the last two weeks in
February. Denise and I will be coming to Paris at the end of January, and we would be delighted
to see you again.
In anticipation, dear Nadia, accept our heartfelt wishes. Wishes for you at the end of this year
and on Christmas Eve.
Affectionately yours,
Théodore
P.S. Some very good news from Kitty, who is doing very well in her London life!

Dear Nadia,
Denise and I have just come back from Venice and I found your letter. Thank you for these lines,
thank you for your thoughts, and above all thank you for your faithful friendship: it is so precious
to us.
A present where the past ceases to remain alive would seem suspicious to me, not to mention a
lie. And I am certain that the past is not dead for my father, but he shrouds in self-imposed
silence—in addition to a certain innate sense of “modesty”— the whole array of exterior
circumstances we know of.
We found him quite disabled because of his leg, which he can no longer rehabilitate—which
humiliates him a lot and distresses us. He conducted Orpheus and Monumentum Gesualdo
without excessive fatigue. These are not exactly the types of works to be appreciated by the
public of Venice . . . Your presence (which we had hoped for) and the reassurance of your
friendship were very much missed!
When will you see us, dear Nadia? Kitty joins Denise and myself in sending you our love, and
we want to tell you of our great devotion and our affection,

Prince Pierre of Monaco, went directly to you, knowing what the heart of such a great and
faithful friend as you can give . . . and how it can weep at the heartbreak of such separation. We

These quick words on the eve of my exhibition. Thank you, thank you for your letter, received in
Hollywood where I finally had the opportunity to see my father privately. He is marvelous, as
always, but alas, much less alert.

My very dear Nadia,
It was upon arriving at the hotel in Holland, where we have settled for a few months, that I found
your letter addressed to Geneva . . . it followed us here where we were not! We were actually in
Switzerland at that time!! We could’ve had the pleasure of seeing you then. We were brought
back here by an emergency surrounding Denise’s mother, who had had an attack, and I had to
leave my work here (large frescoes in a church) abruptly to go back to Geneva, but our mail
continued to be delivered here. What bad luck for us, dear Nadia. How happy we would have
been to see you again, to discuss so many problems we keep in our hearts . . . And during our
unplanned stay in Switzerland, I heard from my sister, Milène, that my Father and Vera and
Robert Craft were in Zurich!! Oh! Dear Friend, there is so much distress in this, I cannot find the
words to write to you, but I know you can read between the lines. At moments, my dear Father
gives the impression that he is doing better, and finds with his intelligence some critical
responses, but it’s impossible to find any sort of happiness in his eyes. His legs don’t carry him
anymore, that you know, but not at all anymore . . . and here he is travelling: after Zurich it will
be Paris! My great, dear Friend, it’s a tragedy, but what can be done? Zurich was nonetheless
necessary so that Denise and I could have the great, great happiness of spending a few hours with
him, and he also found joy in it, so he told us. How comforting for a son’s heart. I know you
were told, dear Nadia, that it tired him to have visits—and I feel so sad for you. They are going
to go to Paris . . .
To finish off these heartfelt lines, I’ll tell you again, dear Nadia, how upset we were to have
missed you in Geneva, but I hope [we will see each other] in Paris . . . when? I don’t know
exactly.
With all our faithful attachment, Denise and I express to you our deepest affection and send
tender thoughts,
Théodore
P.S. We will be with you in thought, especially the day after tomorrow, the 17th, at the emotional
moment of noon. With you and all of your friends.

My dear and great Friend,
A single line from your letter tells us what you think, but what you tell us about it overwhelms
us…and you wrote to us by hand! Thank you from the bottom of my heart! You understand the
tragedy of the situation. When I wanted to go see my dear Father on June 18 for his birthday
after his operation (double operation) in New York, I received a response from Vera asking me
not to come for the moment . . . I don’t want to add any commentary, but you can imagine my
pain. My dear Father can no longer react, but he is perfectly aware of it and suffers profoundly
from it, that I know. I am close to him through prayer—with you, dear Nadia, we are close to
him, but [only] through prayer—and I thank you from the bottom of my heart that I can write
these lines to you.
Denise and I express to you our deepest commitment.
Your

Votre,
Théodore
