Stravinsky to Boulanger

May 16, 1956
My very dear Nadia,
Excuse my silence—it's the fault of the Biennale! No one knows the date of my concert; all we
know is that it will be no later than September 20. I cannot even obtain from them the smallest
details about the choruses, orchestra, soloists; correspondence has been dragging on for months!
It’s horrendous.
I just changed the entire program, because they didn’t want to make my job easier in letting Bob
Craft conduct the old Venetian masters that he certainly knows better than I. I sent a cable to tell
them that I will conduct at the Fenice, and not at St Mark’s,* the following program:
Canticum
Mass
Canticum
Choral und Variationen (Vom Himmel hoch) of J. S. Bach in my arrangement for choir and
orchestra. B. &. H. is in the process of printing it.
As usual we are staying at the Bauer Gruenwald Hotel. In a month we are taking the train to New
York where we will set off (Vulcania) for Athens.
I am conducting Les Noces and Bob my Bach arrangement on May 27 at Ojai.
Fond and affectionate wishes,
I Str

Tres chere Nadia,

My very dear Nadia,
I have just read your kind letter of Feb. 21 and thank you with all my heart for having thought of
March 2.
What Halffter solicits is at the same time both touching and impossible for me. If you only knew
everything I have to do before embarking in mid-June for Europe (Greece and Constantinople for
our vacation, then concerts: Venice, Switzerland, Germany, Vienna and London, then returning
to New York for Christmas, triple concert with the Philharmonic—Rite and Persephone—and
recording Persephone with Columbia.)*
I finished my Canticum Sacrum (short, 16 minutes, and quite difficult) and now . . . proofs,
which means—corrections!
Having finished the Canticum, I have put myself to work on an instrumental version (with choir)
of J. S. Bach's Canonic Variations on Vom Himmel hoch da komm' ich her, which I have decided
to do with my Canticum in Venice along with other compositions of a religious nature: Andrea
Gabrieli, Schütz, Monteverdi, Gesualdo. The Bach Variations are taking more time than I
thought. I am going to have Bob perform them here in the Ojai Festival in May where I am
conducting my Noces. This work is interrupted by all sorts of things and right at this moment, for
at least a week, by an “abbreviated version of Petroushka” for TV cartoons, length—12 minutes.
They are making episodes of the start, of Petroushka's cell, of the Moor, one part of the
Disguises and of Petroushka's death. In brief —a potpourri; and I am doing it for money!!! Yes,
sir, it is certainly blameworthy but also excusable when one thinks of the taxes that gouge us
without pity.
*All this at the beginning of January 1957 to which a showing of Vera's paintings has just been
added. Tomorrow the showing of her work at the Santa Barbara Museum will take place . . .

Tres chere Nadia,
Gabrielli, Schutz, Monteverd[i], Gesualdo.

Dear, dear friend,
What a long time has passed without news from you. I dare not ask you to write to me, but . . . I
hope that you have an irresistible desire to do so. The In Memoriam—what music, everything is
there. I would like to speak to you about every note, but . . . you know these truths better than
me. What we have in our hands is real, concrete, and thus we acquire what I will not have the
poor taste to express.
When are you coming to Europe? Where, if you are coming? We all need you furiously, but,
despite my selfishness, I will choose to leave you to your work. Why are the distances so great
and the expenses so high? I would come to see you, but . . . it is only a dream.
We’ve recently had a festival—lots of notes, “impressions,” “emotions,” and little music. Many
systems, without any real technique, and one quickly perceives that these types of complications
are only a crutch.
But, no matter what language they choose . . . the result would be in vain, because they produce
nothing more than the banal and the odd. Desire is what is missing from their music.
Wasn’t able to hear Noces yesterday. Scherchen conducted. It was likely good but dogmatic.
Nothing else to tell you that is worth being said. I send my love, thank you and I believe I benefit
completely from everything you have given us.
With all my heart, your faithful

Bien cher Ami,
L’In Memoriam—

Dear Nadia,
I was happy to have your letter giving me your comments on the performance of [The] Rake at
the Opera Comique.
I received word from Françoise yesterday, and I notice that your impressions were similar. All
the better. At the heart of it, it must be a good performance, but I, like you, deplore that there
were changes [that caused problems] with continuity between scenes. It is precisely what I feared
everywhere and I had finally managed to avoid in the Boston performance.
I have asked Swarzensky, from rue d’Anjou, to send me the press clippings, and I hope he will
do it.
Those who told you I was thrilled with the Boulez article are in all cases quite adept at invention.
In any case I only became aware of it eight days ago, and consequently no one has had the time
to hear about my reactions since, in any case it would suffice to read the middle of page 221 to
be sure I am not at risk of being more charmed by Boulez than he pretends to be by me.
If you have the time, I suggest you also see Souvtchinsky’s article:
Page 21: “. . . the young, contemporary music’s aspirations which are no longer with Stravinsky .
. . ”
Also page 22, note I: “Above all, it is evidently a question of Stravinsky’s great works like Le
Sacre du printemps, Les Noces, Le Rossignol.”
The Salon’s careerism continues!!! . . .
Did you receive my letter? You haven’t told me about the Cantata . . . I would like, however, to
know how they sang and played it and how it was received?
Do not be “lazy”; answer me soon.
While waiting, I send fond wishes,

Chere Nadia,
J’ai ete heureux d’avoir votre lettre m’apportant vos commentaires sur l’execution du Rake a
l’Opera Comique.

Will this arrive on the intended day so that my wishes might convey to you my constant
thoughts? What prayers wouldn’t I say so that you would conduct The Rake, Dear Igor, but I
don’t dare believe it yet!
Recently heard an incredibly striking rehearsal for Noces—amateur choir, disoriented at first,
soon took the score on, and ultimately were overtaken by a not impeccable enthusiasm, but
modestly did their best. Good soloists, a conductor who knew his role, [but a] foolish public. It’s
running for only one repeat performance.
Excuse this second letter—about the theme—I doubt you have accepted, but understand that
Gavoty insisted I countersign his letter.
Try to pull yourself away from the delights of Capone and come quickly—we need you here!
And everywhere. How I miss my couch and those days in Hollywood! But telling you how much
I miss you, I wonder if you know, and think sometimes of me? Lie [if you must], but just tell me
that you do.
Dear Vera, dear Igor, with hugs and kisses, I love you deeply.

public fou, coulant qu’un bisse.

Boulanger to Théodore Strawinsky
September 15, 1960
Dear Théodore,
I am thinking a lot about you right now. Are you going? Are you in Venice—is the past still
living in the present? All of this is preoccupying me as I know you are tormented by it. And it’s
sad, as each loses and nobody wins. And what we lose, especially in this manner, is never to be
found again. I want to hope that my worries are in vain, that you were able to spend some time
with your Father, to hear his new work, well-performed.
Alas, new works always seem difficult, audacious pieces, or more accurately, incomprehensible.
And in all his glory, your Father knows the bitterness of being, ultimately, rather alone with the
present—so cruelly and blindly misunderstood. All of that seems paradoxical and is veiled by a
small number of enlightened musicians and some courtiers.
Certainly, it does not matter: Le Sacre, Noces, Œdipe and soon Canticum Sacrum, then Threni
will take their legitimate places. I am very sad not to be in Venice, close to him—you know what
is in my heart, in my mind, in my life every day. But whether I’m close or far away, he always
seems present to me, and my reverence never ceases to accompany him.
Dear Théodore, all of this tells you, does it not, how much I love you all, Denise, Kitty—in the
memory of your Mother.
And I am your,

Dear Igor,
Forgive my silence, but everything justifies it—first, the worrying preoccupation we all share,
then the student who was to help me work for you was ill, and finally my arm has made writing
very difficult all these past months (while falling I horribly bruised my muscles and my nerves
are still very sore.)
I only had one new score, the second one—and this makes the work more uncertain, because I
have the feeling that I’m forgetting piles of details—moreover, I’ve had to accept, with much
gratitude, to go teach at Sister Edward’s Convent where I’ll be from June 18 to June 26—going
afterward to Santa Barbara (assuming this is still possible!)
I would have to find the right score here with the already corrected parts, around the 15th or 20th
of August (I have to go to Canada again for my visa to be changed to a Professor Visa) and I will
do everything that is possible. But the truth is that new parts must be created, and this I cannot
take on. The student who wanted to do it will not be here for months, unfortunately, and Barbara
does not have the means to assume such work. Ultimately, I will do all that I can—if you knew
how painful it is to write, you would understand why I’ve really not been able to do it.
It is peculiar, I was convinced I wrote to you several weeks ago, when I spoke with you about the
house, about this summer—was it actually a dream? I suddenly have doubts, and yet I can even
remember what I told you. I don’t know myself, anymore! My love to both of you,
NB
[P.S.] I hope to give you the Ave Maria next week. But . . . so many promises have already been
made to me that I don’t believe anything anymore—still, I have Noces, Apollon, Symphonie de
psaumes, Sérénade, etc. . . .
[P.P.S.] Am distressed.

Cher Igor,
