Dear Igor,
Since yesterday, a struggle between despair and rage! As I had told you, I wanted to give an
informal performance at Indiana University, Bloomington. And upon informing my student of
this, I told him: private performance, insisting that he publish nothing before I gave him an exact
text for the program. In his excessive joy, the idiot in fact published nothing except for the only
thing that he ought not have—and announced the premiere of your Sonata. I just sent him a livid
note that, barring a miracle, we could no longer play the Sonata thanks to his “disobedience”—
what do you think about this? I’m upset, but, how could I have foreseen that these precautions
would be inadequate. If you confirm my decision—place an (X) on the slip of attached paper
following “no.” If, given that it is a music school, you choose to overlook it—an (X) following
“yes.” But, I will understand (despite my despair), if it is rage that you choose and refuse in a fit
of anger.
Am proud of my honesty, because . . . You would undoubtedly never have known of his gaffe
otherwise. This is not blackmail—I am consoling myself over the fury I’ve felt since yesterday!
So terrible!
I’ll write Vera another day—first I’m going to confession!
With heartfelt affection for both of you,
NB

Cher Igor,
Assez affreuse !
Véra écrirai [sic] un autre jour—vais d’abord aller me confesser !
Vous embrasse tous deux de tout cœur

Look what I received, Dear Igor—what do you suggest?
Too occupied since my arrival here to write, but between the lecture this winter, the memories of
each of your gestures, setting to rights what I said, sorting out the Sonata, and the Circus Polka,
the lecture on Babel, on Scherzo [à la] Russe, on Perséphone, and then my heart “that beats only
for you” as the song says, and it doesn’t lie. Truly, you are always here and present in Madison!
We live, quite tensely, somewhat somberly, with some relaxation, [illegible word] in the calm of
this place.
My best to Vera and you, my Dear—and already I say with impatience: When am I going to see
you again.
Your
N
[P.S.] Abbot Fortier . . . thrilled. But does not want to thank you before he has read—read and
understood everything. He’s not used to these combinations and so [he] struggles!!

How kind and good you are. Thank you with all my heart. We are working on the Sonata here
for the Sisters and it is such a joy. We’re preparing Palestrina’s St. Dominic Mass, and the Mass
and the Sonata illuminate one other—they present the same problems, fundamentally—and the
material is so beautiful. Oh, how the two pianos sound . . .
No need for effusions, you know what I think better than I do!
To both of you, with all my heart,

Dear Friend,
Received the letter, the pages from Oedipus, the newspaper clipping—thank you. Will arrive
August 5 at 11:43 on the “Chief,” truly hoping we will have lunch together. I miss you greatly. In
the peace of this convent, in the midst of these women whose conviction makes them smile,
close to Sister Edward, I forget a little what makes everything more and more intolerable: false
values, false ambitions, false ideas. What can I say: the lack of values, the absence of ideas, and
satisfaction with this emptiness, not too foolish, not too sad.
Even here, where we are not as isolated as we were in Sinsinawa, the air still carries with it a
dust that nothing can stop.
But it is enough to go back into the Chapel, to pick up once again one of the books that remain a
mainstay, then reread one of your works, to say to one’s self that after everything, this alone
shall remain of our miserable time, deserves to endure, and will overcome our errors, our
blindness, our weaknesses.
I am so happy you are there, and what luck that the Sachses are staying in Santa Barbara! I hope
that you will come often. I need you greatly.
All my affection for Vera and for you,
Much love,
Nadia
[P.S.] Sister Edward sends you her thoughts. She prays for you every day.

Cher Ami,
Reçu lettre, feuilles d’Oedipus, coupure journal—merci. Arriverai le 5 août à 11:43 sur le
« Chief », espère bien que nous déjeunerons ensemble. Vous me manquez tant.
Nadia
[P.-S.] Sister Edward vous envoie bien des pensées. Chaque jour, elle prie pour vous.
