My dear Nadia,
A final note to respond to your letter of April 9.
We are leaving New York on Monday April 28 at 5:00 p.m. with TWA Flight 922. We have a
short stop at the Paris-Orly airfield on Tuesday, April 29 around 1:25 p.m. and continue on the
same airplane to Geneva, to attend performances of The Rake in French on May 2 and 4. We will
then return to Paris on May 8.
As for the small reception after Oedipus Rex, I cannot answer from here. We will need to talk
about this again in Paris and see how everything looks then.
Regarding The Rake, I do not know if, in the end, we will put it on in Paris in May. After what
happened to poor Désormière, it seems doubtful. But you must have known about this sooner
than I.
Fond wishes. “See you soon,”

Chere Nadia,
au pauvre Desormieres cela me parait douteux.
« A bientôt ».

Dear Friend,
Forgive me for coming to bother you about a matter that truthfully is none of my business. But I
am currently working on the Oedipus Rex project—I now have the greatest hopes of finishing it.
Your absence at the March 21 concert greatly distressed our mutual friend, just when she is
taking such pleasure in convincing herself of her active admiration for your work.
All things considered, this is what I found. Would you accept, without anyone knowing (no
exceptions, you have my word) compensation of five, maybe six thousand francs to come
conduct Renard? I want to finalize this and without fear of the least indiscretion—send an urgent
telegraph because the OSP must decide by Tuesday at the latest. It would be unthinkable to do it
without you and it would be so beautiful to hear Renard with you.
Forgive me and know I am your deeply devoted,

Cher Ami,

My very dear Nadia,
I was deeply touched by your affectionate message and send you all my love.
I’ve finished (we are in the process of correcting the proofs in London) the composition for
Sacher (Basel*)—a sort of cantata (alto, tenor, choral, orch., and a narrator): A Sermon, a
Narrative, and a Prayer and have put myself to work on “Flood.” That one will be good to
compose.
Good health for the moment. Beginning March in Mexico (for ten days—Easter), where I am
conducting The Rite and Vera will have an exhibition of her gorgeous paintings.
Heartfelt wishes,
Yours,
I Str.
[P.S.] In July in Santa Fe—conducting Oedipus and Perséphone. End of August–September we
are planning to go to Australia with Bob. October in Berlin with Santa Fe Opera, with Radio
Brussels and BBC in London.

September 15, 1960
Dear Théodore,
I am thinking a lot about you right now. Are you going? Are you in Venice—is the past still
living in the present? All of this is preoccupying me as I know you are tormented by it. And it’s
sad, as each loses and nobody wins. And what we lose, especially in this manner, is never to be
found again. I want to hope that my worries are in vain, that you were able to spend some time
with your Father, to hear his new work, well-performed.
Alas, new works always seem difficult, audacious pieces, or more accurately, incomprehensible.
And in all his glory, your Father knows the bitterness of being, ultimately, rather alone with the
present—so cruelly and blindly misunderstood. All of that seems paradoxical and is veiled by a
small number of enlightened musicians and some courtiers.
Certainly, it does not matter: Le Sacre, Noces, Œdipe and soon Canticum Sacrum, then Threni
will take their legitimate places. I am very sad not to be in Venice, close to him—you know what
is in my heart, in my mind, in my life every day. But whether I’m close or far away, he always
seems present to me, and my reverence never ceases to accompany him.
Dear Théodore, all of this tells you, does it not, how much I love you all, Denise, Kitty—in the
memory of your Mother.
And I am your,
Nadia B.
P.S. I’ll be in Lans en Vercors until the end of the month without a doubt

Boulanger à Théodore Strawinsky
15 septembre 1960

Dear Nadia,
Just a letter in response to the questions you sent me in your letter from Fontainebleau on July
21, received just now.
I leave here July 30 and will be in New York (Hotel Lombardy, 111 East 56th Street, New York
22, N.Y.) from August 2 to August 7, on which date I embark on the SS Constitution (American
Export Lines) to arrive in Naples on August 15.
I will be in Milan until September 3 (c/o Scala or Hotel Duomo)
Following that, Venice (c/o Biennale or Hotel Bauer-Grunwald)
The premiere I’m conducting is on September 8; afterward two other performances, the 10th and
the 12th, under an unknown director, probably someone from [La] Scala (I have recommended
Markevitch, but it appears that will not work out).
After the shows I will probably make recordings of [The] Rake, but where? . . . (Venice or Milan) .
. . and when exactly? . . . I have no idea.
Afterward I have a pair of concerts in Milan at the Scala on the 27th and 28th of September.
Then October 8: Cologne (Oedipus Rex);
October 14: Baden-Baden;
October 21: Munich (the new Oedipus Rex with Cocteau)
I must reboard the SS Constitution in Genoa or Naples the 29th or 30th of October to come back
to New York for November 7.
See you soon.
In all haste, I am very affectionately,
Your

Chere Nadia,

Puis le 8 octobre : Cologne (Oedipus Rex);

Dear Friend,
Received the letter, the pages from Oedipus, the newspaper clipping—thank you. Will arrive
August 5 at 11:43 on the “Chief,” truly hoping we will have lunch together. I miss you greatly. In
the peace of this convent, in the midst of these women whose conviction makes them smile,
close to Sister Edward, I forget a little what makes everything more and more intolerable: false
values, false ambitions, false ideas. What can I say: the lack of values, the absence of ideas, and
satisfaction with this emptiness, not too foolish, not too sad.
Even here, where we are not as isolated as we were in Sinsinawa, the air still carries with it a
dust that nothing can stop.
But it is enough to go back into the Chapel, to pick up once again one of the books that remain a
mainstay, then reread one of your works, to say to one’s self that after everything, this alone
shall remain of our miserable time, deserves to endure, and will overcome our errors, our
blindness, our weaknesses.
I am so happy you are there, and what luck that the Sachses are staying in Santa Barbara! I hope
that you will come often. I need you greatly.
All my affection for Vera and for you,
Much love,
Nadia

Cher Ami,
Reçu lettre, feuilles d’Oedipus, coupure journal—merci. Arriverai le 5 août à 11:43 sur le
« Chief », espère bien que nous déjeunerons ensemble. Vous me manquez tant.

A few days ago I read this letter in the Los Angeles Times.
Have you received the photostats (negative and positive) of pages 58 and 59 of Oedipus that you
were missing? The Blue Print should have sent them to you 5–6 days ago. Very upset at this
oversight.

Dear Friend,
Everything has arrived, has been bound, and I am delighted. Sad to be incoherent—you should
receive a very nice letter regarding these two scores. But you know, without my proving it in
words. I understand them, I believe, and I love them as much as I am able to love and admire

Only . . . one complaint, are pages 58 and 59 of Oedipus supposed to be hidden from me? They
are missing, negative as well as positive. Would you please go to the trouble of having them
printed and sent to me: N.B., c/o Dominican Sisters Edgewood Madison Wisc.?
Today is your birthday. I have just sent you a sad little telegram. You should receive a “pretty”
letter with flowers all around. But, I send fondest thoughts, and I know that you know how much
I love you.

Cher Ami,
Elles
