My very dear Nadia,
I have just read your kind letter of Feb. 21 and thank you with all my heart for having thought of
March 2.
What Halffter solicits is at the same time both touching and impossible for me. If you only knew
everything I have to do before embarking in mid-June for Europe (Greece and Constantinople for
our vacation, then concerts: Venice, Switzerland, Germany, Vienna and London, then returning
to New York for Christmas, triple concert with the Philharmonic—Rite and Persephone—and
recording Persephone with Columbia.)*
I finished my Canticum Sacrum (short, 16 minutes, and quite difficult) and now . . . proofs,
which means—corrections!
Having finished the Canticum, I have put myself to work on an instrumental version (with choir)
of J. S. Bach's Canonic Variations on Vom Himmel hoch da komm' ich her, which I have decided
to do with my Canticum in Venice along with other compositions of a religious nature: Andrea
Gabrieli, Schütz, Monteverdi, Gesualdo. The Bach Variations are taking more time than I
thought. I am going to have Bob perform them here in the Ojai Festival in May where I am
conducting my Noces. This work is interrupted by all sorts of things and right at this moment, for
at least a week, by an “abbreviated version of Petroushka” for TV cartoons, length—12 minutes.
They are making episodes of the start, of Petroushka's cell, of the Moor, one part of the
Disguises and of Petroushka's death. In brief —a potpourri; and I am doing it for money!!! Yes,
sir, it is certainly blameworthy but also excusable when one thinks of the taxes that gouge us
without pity.
*All this at the beginning of January 1957 to which a showing of Vera's paintings has just been
added. Tomorrow the showing of her work at the Santa Barbara Museum will take place . . .
Love,
I Str.

Tres chere Nadia,
Gabrielli, Schutz, Monteverd[i], Gesualdo.

My very dear Nadia —
Thank you for your letter, for having remembered March 2 (not the 3rd) and for the past fifteen
years!
Happy that you are reading my Septet. I conducted its premiere at Dumbarton Oaks. Bob is
conducting it tomorrow in Los Angeles—as for me, I have also conducted a symphonic concert
here. Ask Boosey & Hawkes to send you my new Three Shakespeare Songs, which Bob is also
conducting tomorrow.
I need to be in Rome April 4 and stay there until the 18th, then Turin (Perséphone and the Violin
Concerto), then Lugano*) (radio Monte Carlo) the 27th, then staying with Théodore, then
Cologne and Baden-Baden in May, then London (Royal Philharmonic) May 27, then Lisbon at
the beginning of June, then returning by plane to the U.S.
Is it really possible we will not see one another this time?
Love, kisses,

Dear Friend,
Here is the sheet music for Perséphone. I cannot tell you my sorrow in parting with it—not a day
went by that I did not owe it for profound and radiant joys. I was hoping to make a two-piano
reduction—this will [have to wait] for your return. Allow me also to enclose a cheque—if the
circumstances and my stupid illness were not complicating everything, you would have had it
sooner. But what you’ve given is so meaningful that many years will pass before we will have
exhausted its richness.
How can I thank you—need I tell you. You know, don't you, what you mean to all of us, and
above all, I add to a limitless admiration my whole-hearted affection, dear Friend,

Cher Ami,

My very dear Nadia,
I was deeply touched by your affectionate message and send you all my love.
I’ve finished (we are in the process of correcting the proofs in London) the composition for
Sacher (Basel*)—a sort of cantata (alto, tenor, choral, orch., and a narrator): A Sermon, a
Narrative, and a Prayer and have put myself to work on “Flood.” That one will be good to
compose.
Good health for the moment. Beginning March in Mexico (for ten days—Easter), where I am
conducting The Rite and Vera will have an exhibition of her gorgeous paintings.
Heartfelt wishes,
Yours,
I Str.
[P.S.] In July in Santa Fe—conducting Oedipus and Perséphone. End of August–September we
are planning to go to Australia with Bob. October in Berlin with Santa Fe Opera, with Radio
Brussels and BBC in London.

My Dear Friend,
I’ve received numerous letters following Perséphone. You must have been, I believe, content
with this concert, with this program, with what you achieved for a performance. Father Fortier
(the one who was at Santa Barbara) wrote to me that the broadcast in Canada was marvelous.
What nostalgia at not being there!
You will receive a letter from Winifred Johnstone concerning the Lili Boulanger Foundation. I
believe that you’ll be able to sign the ballot sheet without reservation in support of Bhatia, a very
gifted young Hindu who is very sick, [and] whom this bursary would help so much. And for Per
Nørgard, a young Dane, who is a real musician. It seems to me that these two boys truly deserve
this award.
I won’t tell you again everything that keeps me close [to you]. My fond wishes to you both and a
thousand to Bob,
Your
Nadia

Mon Cher Ami,

My dear Nadia,
A thousand thanks for your very kind letter of April 11 (Cap d'Antibes).
I signed a contract with the Biennale to conduct the premiere of The Rake's Progress at the
Venice Festival on September 10. But it seems that my editor [at] Boosey & Hawkes was more
or less further along with things at la Scala and, to avoid trouble, (which, personally, shouldn't
concern me) he is looking to find a compromise of a nature that satisfies the Biennale as much as
la Scala and myself. [A compromise] of the sort that would allow for la Scala to participate in the
Festival, because as far as I’m concerned I do not want to modify the time of my arrival in Italy,
which must be in Venice, rather than Milan.
I have indeed heard murmurs of Markevitch’s success with Le Sacre but I did not know that he
had done Mavra and Perséphone. I knew that he had conducted Orphée at the Venice Biennial in
1949, but I did not know that he had given concert performances of it.
The opera is finished except for the short Prelude that I am in the process of composing; there
will not be an overture. I still have lots of work because Boosey & Hawkes are printing the
piano/vocal score, and I am constantly receiving proofs from Germany to correct.
I am really counting on us seeing one another in Venice . . . But what madness awaits us there!!!
Théodore's family will come from Switzerland with Kitty, and Milène and André (who will be in
Nice this summer) will also pop by.
Write me always dear Nadia, telling me a bit more about yourself. All my love, unfortunately, as
always, with great haste.

Chere Nadia,

Dear Friend,
Where to begin? First with questions, one above all the others: Your opera, will it take place in
Venice? When?
Please, let me know, because I would like to change all my plans in order to hear it.
I’ve just given two lectures on you. Not good, not complete, they need more work. But I have
reread all your music in one go . . . and . . . but what can any of that do for you. Yet, in the end,
among all those who know this work the best, where everything is different and everything has
come at the same time, I feel myself very unworthy of so great an honor. The audience was
excellent, an outstanding reaction. In Cannes!! In Nice!!
I write to you like I write to all the others, but, God knows how much I love you, and I feel
myself close to you. But I cannot for a single moment forget my reverence, my gratitude [to
you]. And there you are all alone, so high above, separated from us forever and ever. What a sad
story, because in the grand scheme of things, you are also a man like us and need us to surround
you, to fawn over you, to joke with you. I cannot.
Well, my beautiful letter finishes abruptly. I look around me, I say to myself: I will tell him, and .
. . nothing seems to me worthy of taking up your time. How peaceful you would be if everyone
were stricken by the same paralysis.
One day, I’ll speak to you of some young people who merit your attention, of some books that
are worth your reading. But as for the artistic and musical life, I will have the courage, no, might
I say the charity, to tell you nothing.
Did you know about the marvelous performances they tell me Markevitch has given of Le Sacre,
Perséphone, Orpheus? I can believe it without any difficulty, because he worked [hard] and
understood.
How I miss you, and how sad it is not to see you anymore. The sofa is waiting for me, I
remember every minute. Why is the world so troubled, California so far, and trips so
complicated?
Know that I forget nothing, it’s the same as telling myself: You, and all that you are, are part of
my own life.
My affection, my tenderness, and my fondness to both you and Vera

Cher Ami,
Enfin, je me
qu’on blague.
Nadia B.

Dear Nadia,
Helen, with whom I spoke on the telephone just a moment ago, will have told you that my father
urgently requests his score for Perséphone. I hope that she will have understood (we couldn’t
hear one another very well). To be safe, I’m quickly sending you this letter.
The American ambassador to Italy, Mr. James Clément Dunn, is in Paris these days and must
return to America [after]. My father asked him to be so kind as to bring with him several scores
(among them his manuscript for Perséphone) which he needs most urgently. All that needs to be
done then is to drop them off at the embassy marked for Mr. I. Str., care of The Honorable James
Clément Dunn.
The manuscript can still be found at your place, in the safe. It could wait for my return, but that
would probably be too late.
You are no doubt in London at the moment. We return on the 25th. I have finally gotten over a
nasty flu picked up in Holland and am attempting to take advantage of a marvelous country and
weather that seems made to order.
Annette sent me the enrollment brochure for your Wednesday course. I am rather unsure I could
attend regularly and so I dare not enroll. I’m terribly sorry about that. Would you allow me
anyway, dear Nadia, to attend when it is possible for me to do so? Françoise is pulling her hair
out at the idea that she is a civil servant and won’t be free either

Dunn.
Je me remets enfin
Me
