My dear Friend,
Thank you with all my heart—your thoughts touched me greatly.
I can never tell you what these months with the symphony have been and the daily discoveries
that come from reading and rereading this extraordinary score.
If I knew how, I wish I could express the importance of this work, in all aspects. But actually,
that would be pretentious—it speaks so well for itself!
In this letter, please find our wishes, affection, and fervent admiration,
Nadia Boulanger

Mon cher Ami,

Dear Friend,
I’ve received your letter—everything is finished and sent off. It is unfortunate about the C-sharp
because of the C-natural in the following measure, but . . . at the heart of the matter I am sure
you are correct, naturally.
No need to thank me, we would all be deeply honored and happy if we could help you with
anything at all. These are certainly not tasks for you.
In all haste, and with sincere affection,
Nadia Boulanger
[P.S.] I recommended to Païchadze that he have someone review the orchestral score and ensure
the corrections are incorporated. I hope that there is someone who can do that with care.

Cher Ami,
soin.

Very dear friend,
Thank you with all my heart for the trouble you have taken with this, and please kindly forgive
the haste of my responses.
Attached are the blue pages with my answers written beside them in the margins.
As for the first two questions of your letter—(1) indication of the Psalm numbers and (2) the use
of men’s and children’s voices, and in their absence, women’s voices in the composition—it is
completely essential to include this in the piano/vocal reduction. For the rest, if I remember, I’ve
already spoken to Païchadze about the matter. But my memory fails me to such a point [I have
even forgotten what my Symphonie de psaumes is called] that I can’t seem to remember anything
anymore! It’s becoming terrible.
Please believe in my loyal friendship and my infinite thanks,

terrible
Croyez à ma fidèle amitié et à ma reconnaissance infinie.

Dear Friend,
I see that certain points have already been set by you. I’m only sending you the pages containing
questions. Could you respond to the following all at once:
1) Indication of Psalm numbers?
2) Wouldn’t it be good to indicate that you wanted men’s voices and children’s (or women’s)
voices?)
The rest is as follows:
1) Compare the trumpet on p. 33 with that on p. 35.
2) the A-natural added in pencil but not by yourself on p. 22, second measure of R7.
3) And the chord on the last page—I believe very much that the C-sharp is correct, in spite of the
recordings, because when the issue arose in the orchestral part, you played a C-natural with a
shocked expression—and added the C-sharp immediately after.
Excuse me for having been slightly late—Please be sure, it was not my fault.
With deep devotion,

Cher Ami,

Dear Mademoiselle,
I sent you the new proofs of Stravinsky’s Symphonie de psaumes (piano/vocal) yesterday by
registered mail along with the exemplar of the first edition that you corrected.
I would ask you to look at these proofs at your first available opportunity and to return them to
me as soon as will be possible for you. This urgency is caused by the fact that the first edition of
the score has been sold out to the last copy for quite some time, and we have been forced to
refuse requests for this work, which is most unpleasant for both the composer and the editor. The
new printing is therefore very urgent, especially because we must give several performances of
the Symphonie during the first months of this upcoming season.
In the hopes that you will understand this S.O.S. call and thanking you in advance, please accept
my most respectful sentiments, Madame.
Sincerely,

Very touched, dear Nadia, by your letter for me of June 18—thank you!
We leave tomorrow to conduct a concert on June 13 in Red-Rocks, close to Denver. The 14th we
fly to New York and then on to London on the 15th where for two weeks I am recording my
R[ake’s] Progress with Columbia. The 28th or the 29th I’ll conduct my Bach Variations and my
Symph. of Psalms at Oxford (Bach Society)—then back to U.S.A. I just wanted you to be up to
date on our plans as much as possible.

[P.S.] We bought the Baroness of Erlanger’s house. Immense amount of work to repair
everything. This year (with so many trips), composing, the house (we are not selling the one
where we live. I like it too much—it's been twenty-four years!).

Dear Vera, soon it will be your birthday! Where is Santa Barbara? “Where are the snows of
yesteryear?” I miss you so, both of you who occupy my thoughts day after day. And only silence
between us, because I live life too quickly, because. . . And time passes, and ultimately, though
we love each other, we live like strangers.
Well, here at least are some wishes so that one day per year you see I am with you. I remember
everything, and I can’t accept the idea we won’t see each other anymore. It is too absurd. Why is
the world so big and Hollywood so far from Paris? Koussevitzky had asked me to come to
Tanglewood next year. I think I wrote about this to Igor, but everything makes this trip
impossible, and I declined, after weeks of indecision. Certainly, if I thought I would have seen
you, something inside me would have rebelled. But I would have had to arrive for the opening of
classes by plane and leave the following day. So, California was out of the question. And,
honestly, I cannot hope that you’ll come to Europe, a Europe that everything threatens. What
savages, what fools we are who, no matter what, want to find nothing more than perfect ways to
destroy everything. But . . . all I need is to think of Igor, working at his opera, to prepare the
Symphonie de psaumes that I am conducting seven times in four days in Brussels (imagine my
joy, and my terror, after everything the symphony is—and I risk nothing, I alone am in danger,
and that gives me courage, one feels so small. I hear Igor’s pulse, I know all too well how far
away, and it can be no other way, but I am so happy to have this project), and, when confronted
with the only values that matter, we fight, each in his own way. Has Igor read Gisele Brelet’s
book, Le temps musical? I would like to know what he thinks of it, but doubt that he has been
able to immerse himself in these two dense volumes.
Like a child, I tell myself stories. I dream that I am arranging my cushions at your place so I can
sleep on the couch. I watch Igor’s hand, his fingers, moving a marble in Chinese Checkers. I see
his table again, the frame he rebuilt so patiently for George, the telegram from Dolin, the Sonate
at Milhaud’s. Altogether, these small details make me believe, once I really start to imagine, that
we are together and the conversation will begin again.
Why is this only a dream?
I forgot to tell you, in July I saw Théodore, Denise, and little, adorable Kitty. She’s very fragile,
but so well looked after. And so happy to be with “a dad and a mum.”
Dear Vera, I send my love to you and Igor and have the pretension, foolish perhaps, to believe
quite certainly there is no one who loves you more
than your,
Nadia

de venir l’an prochain à Tanglewood.
Nadia

Dear Igor,
Forgive my silence, but everything justifies it—first, the worrying preoccupation we all share,
then the student who was to help me work for you was ill, and finally my arm has made writing
very difficult all these past months (while falling I horribly bruised my muscles and my nerves
are still very sore.)
I only had one new score, the second one—and this makes the work more uncertain, because I
have the feeling that I’m forgetting piles of details—moreover, I’ve had to accept, with much
gratitude, to go teach at Sister Edward’s Convent where I’ll be from June 18 to June 26—going
afterward to Santa Barbara (assuming this is still possible!)
I would have to find the right score here with the already corrected parts, around the 15th or 20th
of August (I have to go to Canada again for my visa to be changed to a Professor Visa) and I will
do everything that is possible. But the truth is that new parts must be created, and this I cannot
take on. The student who wanted to do it will not be here for months, unfortunately, and Barbara
does not have the means to assume such work. Ultimately, I will do all that I can—if you knew
how painful it is to write, you would understand why I’ve really not been able to do it.
It is peculiar, I was convinced I wrote to you several weeks ago, when I spoke with you about the
house, about this summer—was it actually a dream? I suddenly have doubts, and yet I can even
remember what I told you. I don’t know myself, anymore! My love to both of you,
NB
[P.S.] I hope to give you the Ave Maria next week. But . . . so many promises have already been
made to me that I don’t believe anything anymore—still, I have Noces, Apollon, Symphonie de
psaumes, Sérénade, etc. . . .
[P.P.S.] Am distressed.

Cher Igor,
