Dear, Dear Igor, will I be with you on the 18th? I am so afraid I left it too late. I give you a kiss
on both cheeks. I say a big thank you to you who, every day, gives us such joy. And I say to you
Happy Birthday, Happy New Year and . . . see you soon! Because you are coming, aren’t you?
The news is all frighteningly contradictory, but I don’t want to doubt it? because that would be a
terrible disappointment.
Fondly and with all of my affection,

What Happiness, Dear Friend—thank you for having responded so quickly. The rumors that run
through Rome and Paris are so varied and contradictory that one must give up trying to
understand. One day “the premiere will take place in Milan” the other “in Venice” then, “nothing
is decided, everything is to be struck and will be remounted in Paris in the spring,” then, “the 9th
in Venice,” “monstrous attempt by the Scala [to go after] the Biennale.” “American performers
have been hired.” “What, it is the Italians who are doing everything.” “Stage design by Balthus.”
“No, by Berman.” This back and forth only tormented me at first and now seems to me to be
exaggerated, so I want to try not to hear anything about it, and will wait.
How can I say what happiness it will be to see you again and to hear your opera.
Forgive me, but between competitions, lessons, [and] concerts, I’ve lost my head. But I’ve found
it again to tell you of my joy [and] my tenderness.
To Vera, to you,
NB
[P.S.] Admirable, your message.
[P.P.S.] Ah, it’s the 18th—happy birthday!!

Quel Bonheur, Cher Ami—merci d’avoir répondu si vite [sic].
NB

Dear Igor,
Will this letter still reach you? I certainly hope so, because I must tell you with what wild
impatience I await the moment when I will see you and Vera again. Are you still arriving in
Naples on August 15? When will you be in Venice? Until when?
A line to settle things would do me a great service, because I would like to arrange all my plans
in accordance with yours, if possible.
So :
Date of arrival in Naples?
Name of the boat
Date of arrival in Venice
Date of departure from Venice
Destination
Date of departure for the United States
Try to get an idea of what it means [to me] to hear The Rake's Progress—and to see you—you
can’t imagine!!
To both of you with all my heart,
Nadia B.

Donc :
Date arrivée Naples ?
Nom du bateau
Date arrivée Venise
Date départ Venise
Destination

My dear Friend,
I didn’t want to bother you, but nevertheless I can’t go on without telling you my thoughts. I have
so much to tell you. You in Warsaw, which was one of the reasons for the Festival and the
Canticum here. I haven’t seen the reviews, [which I understand are] a bit harsh, but the
musicians understood, at least the ones who are musicians.
With fond wishes, I am your

Mon cher Ami,

You are going to spend a few hours in Paris, my dears, and I am stuck here in this clinic. What
can I say? The inevitability of the situation makes me so deeply sad.
I send my love and am with all my heart your
Nadia B.
Many prayers to God for you, you fight with such immense courage, but this does not surprise
me. May He grant you His Saintly protection.
[P.S.] Just now, Théodore, whom I called, relayed to me what Dr. Gilbert said. I am delighted the
concert in Rome was so beautiful. I hope that you thought so and were satisfied in spite of
everything.

Thank you for your telegram, Dear Vera, Dear Igor. I am so sad to have not seen you Monday.
Words seem so weak to me and become sentimental so quickly. And I have difficulty saying
what my tenderness would nonetheless wish to express.
You are going to leave, but I cannot leave Europe this year, and much time will pass without us
seeing each other again. It is difficult for me [to accept it].
Every night here, I have heard your works all over, Dear Igor. I hope that you take a little
pleasure from all the joy we owe you and that you are happy to do so much with all that you
have been given. But forgive my nonsense.
Fond wishes. I love you with all my heart and am your
Nadia B.

Nadia B

Dear Théodore,
Thank you for your letter—I think so much about you. I am slowly getting over this absurd
adventure—but everything is returning to order.
I wasn’t able to see your Father, but Mrs. Sachs, who was quite beside herself, was truly happy
to find him back to his old self.
I understand your sorrow.
Know that I think of you both and please accept my wishes and deepest affection.

My Dear Friend,
I’ve received numerous letters following Perséphone. You must have been, I believe, content
with this concert, with this program, with what you achieved for a performance. Father Fortier
(the one who was at Santa Barbara) wrote to me that the broadcast in Canada was marvelous.
What nostalgia at not being there!
You will receive a letter from Winifred Johnstone concerning the Lili Boulanger Foundation. I
believe that you’ll be able to sign the ballot sheet without reservation in support of Bhatia, a very
gifted young Hindu who is very sick, [and] whom this bursary would help so much. And for Per
Nørgard, a young Dane, who is a real musician. It seems to me that these two boys truly deserve
this award.
I won’t tell you again everything that keeps me close [to you]. My fond wishes to you both and a
thousand to Bob,
Your
Nadia

Mon Cher Ami,
Votre
Nadia
