My dear Nadia,
This is to tell you I received your letter of April 16 and as always—no time for letters.
Boulez made an excellent impression on all of us: a musician of the first order, highly intelligent,
he has good manners and is probably a generous man. His Marteau sans maître, which he
conducted so well here, is an admirably well-ordered score, in spite of all the auditory and visual
complications (counterpoint, rhythm, tempo). Without being too familiar with Boulez's music, I
find it, frankly, preferable to many other things from his generation.
I never received the microfilm (Isaak-Webern) that you had promised me from George Sachs
who was supposed to come to the United States this Easter. We haven't heard anything about it.
Just spoke with Nica Nabokov who will have returned to Paris when you read these lines.
Telephone him to get the latest news.
Please respond.
Love,
I. Str

Chere Nadia,
R.S.P [sic]
Love,
I. Str

Dear Friend,
I counted on sending a young Italian’s sheet music to you. He has just lost his mother in tragic
circumstances and wasn’t able to copy the scores. He has a great need for this award, is very
talented, and a worker—he needs to develop, but he is truly a musician. Did you agree to vote
for him? I hope so. He deserves it and has such a need. Tell Winifred if you accept my proposal
or not.
I think of you constantly, am immersed in the music of the recent meaningful years which were
so beautiful, but I don’t abandon the works of the past, which remain so new, so alive. But . . . I
will leave off with my superfluous comments. The music is, we are nothing, and words add
nothing to it.
I would like to see you so much. But I hear you in the silence and believe I understand you,
understand what will never be said. My fond wishes to you and also to Vera, my thoughts to Bob
and my affection to Milène.

Cher Ami,
Votre
Nadia

Very dear Nadia, Happy Easter. Your note touched me greatly.
Very busy: composition, treatments for my blood and my arteries (protection against new
surprises!?), concert here (Mass and Noces in June), conducting there (Oedipus in Santa Fe in
July), then we fly to South America for a concert tour (sharing the program with Bob), Mexico,
Bogota, Lima, Santiago, Buenos [Aires], Rio, Caracas, from August 1 to September 17. Then to
Venice where Bob and I will be conducting at the Biennale, half and half, on September 26.
We’re publishing the second volume of our conversations with Bob under the title of Memories
and Commentaries. This volume is dedicated to you.
With all my love,
Write always—I’ll be here until the beginning of July.

My friend,
March 2 has passed, it is far and yet always near. I didn’t write to you, yet thought of Her, of
you, of all who live in the shadows, and in the light.
I feel you very near. I live alongside the memories that remain of our origins, of Abraham, with
l’Élégie pour JFK, of this music of which every note has a real density.
I’m attaching a letter from Stoutz’s son—if you like, I can act as an intermediary. I doubt you
want to accept and that he can [afford your fee]. He is nevertheless very serious, and his desire to
obtain this work is at its height.
I have something to tell you. But all that we do not tell each other is there, very powerful, set in
stone.
Thank you for not ceasing to hear this world in your own way, and for the joy of the supreme
security of performance. “He who manages to see every detail sees the whole of everything.”
All my love to you and many thoughts for Vera and Bob,
Nadia B
[P.S.] I was in Rome, hence the delay.

Mon ami,
Nadia B
[P.-S.] J’étais à Rome dont le retard.

Dear Igor,
Thank you for your telegram. I cannot respond with precise details, the Committee President is
absent. But I believe the amount would be $10,000, and perhaps the date changed, but I believe it
will [still] be in 1965.
You can imagine how much I hope this project becomes a reality. I am very sad, Pierre of
Monaco died Tuesday. I still can’t believe everything is finished. But what can I say, I will
always feel his presence.
The heart is tired, yet God’s will be done.
My fondest wishes.
I love you so, Dear Igor,
Your
Nadia
[P.S.] Tell me as soon as you can what you think of this offer.
[P.P.S.] I leave for Monaco but will be here on the 18th. Will telegram as soon as I’ve been able
to contact Mr. Heim.

Cher Igor,

[P.P.-S.] Pars pour Monaco mais serai ici le 18. Cablerai dès qu’aurai pu atteindre M.

Dear Théodore,
What comfort your letter brought me. I was tormented about your silence, without—how
inconceivable—taking the trouble to write to you myself. How strange we are! At last, Denise
can begin to see the end of her ordeal, thank God. You are so often in my thoughts. Yes, it is
very difficult to see time take its toll on someone you love, and I understand your feelings in
seeing your Father once again. His presence is shocking for everyone. It exposes one of the
greatest mysteries there is. For you . . . I nonetheless hope you were able to scale the wall that
long separations create. He needs this intimacy even more than you do—he who keeps his
emotions secret, emotions that are so strong he hides them!
All my affection, I send you my love and my thoughts and am your

Cher Théodore,
Quel soulagement m’a apporté votre lettre.

My Friend,
This morning there was an admirable performance of Le Sacre under the precise, alive, and true
direction of . . . Igor Stravinsky. And to think they argue: “[Is he a] conductor, yes or no?” And
while witnessing the [only] one who could give such a performance, with real connections, his
rhythms so perfectly set out and conducted. Sober, modest, and effective commentaries from H.
Barraud.
No literature sheds light on audible acts— honestly, intelligently. And he has rightly noted that
there was not one Stravinsky of yesterday and another of today, but one Stravinsky, for always,
who is always new. I suppose he will give [a performance of] recent works here, the Requiem
Canticles is a revelation for young people, not to mention those who are capable of hearing and
understanding.
I could go on and on, you give so much with work after work. Always new and always the same.
I do not cease dreaming of seeing you, alas, [and] I hope you know that I always am near to you
and to Vera.
Nadia
[P.S.] May God keep you and give you patience in the face of suffering.
[P.P.S.] And many kind thoughts for Bob.

Mon Ami,
