Dear Friend,
It is not because of negligence, but out of respect for your work that I have not responded—given
the circumstances, I thought that the only reasonable solution would be to send you the proofs:
they arrived today at the same time as your letter.
Unfortunately, I’m leaving for Fontainebleau. They will be corrected. No, I will send you as
early as today the exemplar Païchadze returned to me. Would you please answer my questions as
soon as you can, on this exemplar, and I will transfer them to the proofs.
(I hope that you still have my little list.)
I am sorry at the thought of annoying you with all this, but though there are several cases where
I’m not afraid to take “responsibility,” there are also two or three spots where you alone can
decide.
Need I tell you what a place you hold here in all our minds and hearts? Unbeknownst to you, you
are constantly present through your work. You have managed to inspire such affection that is, I
believe, only equaled by the admiration we have for you. And so . . .
Our very faithful thoughts surround you.
To you, Dear, Great Friend, all we have that is the most sincere and profound,
Nadia Boulanger

Cher Ami,
Nadia Boulanger

Dear Friend,
I’ve made the corrections—everything is at rue d’Anjou—but unfortunately, a few questions
remain. I’m sorry to bother you, but what can be done? Respond on these sheets, make use of
this envelope, and forgive me for not having spared you this annoyance.
You know with what deep sentiments of admiration, affection, and confidence I call myself your,

Dear Friend,
I see that certain points have already been set by you. I’m only sending you the pages containing
questions. Could you respond to the following all at once:
1) Indication of Psalm numbers?
2) Wouldn’t it be good to indicate that you wanted men’s voices and children’s (or women’s)
voices?)
The rest is as follows:
1) Compare the trumpet on p. 33 with that on p. 35.
2) the A-natural added in pencil but not by yourself on p. 22, second measure of R7.
3) And the chord on the last page—I believe very much that the C-sharp is correct, in spite of the
recordings, because when the issue arose in the orchestral part, you played a C-natural with a
shocked expression—and added the C-sharp immediately after.
Excuse me for having been slightly late—Please be sure, it was not my fault.
With deep devotion,
NB

Cher Ami,
NB

Dear Friend,
I’ve received your letter—everything is finished and sent off. It is unfortunate about the C-sharp
because of the C-natural in the following measure, but . . . at the heart of the matter I am sure
you are correct, naturally.
No need to thank me, we would all be deeply honored and happy if we could help you with
anything at all. These are certainly not tasks for you.
In all haste, and with sincere affection,
Nadia Boulanger
[P.S.] I recommended to Païchadze that he have someone review the orchestral score and ensure
the corrections are incorporated. I hope that there is someone who can do that with care.

Cher Ami,
soin.

My dear Friend,
Thank you with all my heart—your thoughts touched me greatly.
I can never tell you what these months with the symphony have been and the daily discoveries
that come from reading and rereading this extraordinary score.
If I knew how, I wish I could express the importance of this work, in all aspects. But actually,
that would be pretentious—it speaks so well for itself!
In this letter, please find our wishes, affection, and fervent admiration,
Nadia Boulanger

Mon cher Ami,

My dear Friend,
How gladly I would have liked to greet you tomorrow, to join myself with those who love you
and to show you my inexpressible affection.
You are such a great light for us. You give me joy that is renewed each day—and you wish to
honor me with a friendship [and] a trust that is most precious to me.
Difficulties of the sort that you can imagine prevent us—my students and I—from sending you
the souvenir we reserved for you. I would like to hope that we will succeed in the end, because
losing this chance to do something for you is very hard on us.
Happy birthday, dear friend—and thank you, if only I could tell you what affection, what
admiration I have for you,
Yours,
Nadia Boulanger

Mon cher Ami,
Votre
Nadia Boulanger

Dear friend,
Excuse this business letter.
We would like to stage either a festival of your work or a half program at the Société musicale
indépendante: including in either case the first performance of the Duo concertant in Paris, and
maybe L’Histoire du soldat or other works of your choice (we cannot, for financial reasons, have
many instruments.) A final program will have to be settled—but first we would like to know
what fee you would accept. We don’t wish to question you on this matter and will do everything
possible to accommodate you, it goes without saying. But our account is pitiful. I must raise the
funds myself and, before going into details, I need to know that one thing.
May I ask you to respond to me as soon as possible.
The concert will take place at the École normale, in the autumn if it is possible.
Believe in my deep affection,
Dear Friend,
Nadia Boulanger

Cher Ami,
Cher Ami,
Nadia Boulanger

Dear Friend,
Forgive me for coming to bother you about a matter that truthfully is none of my business. But I
am currently working on the Oedipus Rex project—I now have the greatest hopes of finishing it.
Your absence at the March 21 concert greatly distressed our mutual friend, just when she is
taking such pleasure in convincing herself of her active admiration for your work.
All things considered, this is what I found. Would you accept, without anyone knowing (no
exceptions, you have my word) compensation of five, maybe six thousand francs to come
conduct Renard? I want to finalize this and without fear of the least indiscretion—send an urgent
telegraph because the OSP must decide by Tuesday at the latest. It would be unthinkable to do it
without you and it would be so beautiful to hear Renard with you.
Forgive me and know I am your deeply devoted,

Cher Ami,

Dear Friend,
To give you complete freedom, I have specified to the School at Fontainebleau that you will only
see students and offer a course for them if the number of students is sufficient. Rest assured the
matter remains open—but understand clearly that you can count on seeing them [the students] in
June and July. It is essential for the completion of projects. The projects are related to your work
and you—projects that, I believe, will interest you. And you are under no obligation, given the
way things have developed.
Your help is of such moral support, and I am in such need of it.
May God be with you on this journey during which so many thoughts accompany you.

Cher Ami,
