Dear Friend,
Here is the sheet music for Perséphone. I cannot tell you my sorrow in parting with it—not a day
went by that I did not owe it for profound and radiant joys. I was hoping to make a two-piano
reduction—this will [have to wait] for your return. Allow me also to enclose a cheque—if the
circumstances and my stupid illness were not complicating everything, you would have had it
sooner. But what you’ve given is so meaningful that many years will pass before we will have
exhausted its richness.
How can I thank you—need I tell you. You know, don't you, what you mean to all of us, and
above all, I add to a limitless admiration my whole-hearted affection, dear Friend,
Your

Cher Ami,

Dear Friend,
I am arriving from Washington—the performance can only take place in the first week of May—
rehearsals begin on the first. I have sent you a wire, because the program with the Thèmes du
concerto must to be given to the printer before the 20th because of the Blisses’ trip. I am also
anxious to work through the finale—because of my eyes, I must know it almost by heart.
Mrs. Bliss has asked me to handle all expenses for you—and yours [your family’s]? I would very
much like news!
With deepest affection,
Nadia

Cher Ami,
Nadia

Dear Friend,
I just sent you a wire because I am very worried about not having received the material for the
first two movements.
The final movement, which I know well now, is so beautiful.
The copying will be done very carefully and I think that all will be well.
I believe that Mrs. Bliss counts on having the manuscript for the performance. Would you please
send it to me? I will deliver it to her. Or would you prefer to send it to her directly? Excuse my
meddling in something that does not concern me—but . . . have you thought to have the
dedication printed
Another thing: I do not know if you should come here next year—but could we draft an
agreement saying that you reserve—for you firstly, and then for me should you be unable—the
performance of the Concerto, for one year? I am writing to Strecker to say the same thing, but
naturally, only what suits you can suit me.
But, it seems to me that I have so connected my life with your work this year that I would give
anything—if you do not come—to have the remarkable privilege of making the concerto known
here.
Forgive me if you find this request indiscreet, [and] know that I am guided only by my deep
affection for what you mean to all of us, and not foolish ambition. It is a matter of pride in
knowing what this concerto represents. Last night, again, at Wellesley, it was such a wonderful
time with Le Sacre. Today with the Duo concertant; the day before yesterday with the Concerto
for Two Pianos; Saturday the Ave Maria; next week, Mavra; and so forth . . .
How can I thank you? My thoughts go much further, because a work of art, to a certain degree, is
an image of God. I cannot express it, but I know the proof flows from what is beautiful, from
what is.
With great affection,
Nadia

Cher Ami,
Voulez-vous bien me
l’envoyer.
convient peut me convenir.
Nadia

April 25, 1938
Very Dear Nadia,
Tomorrow the Europa will leave from Cherbourg, bringing you this note along with the music
that Strecker placed on board in Bremen (with a letter for you). This music (complete parts for
the Concerto in E-flat) will be sent in rolls (three, if I’m not mistaken) by mail and . . . Strecker
hopes that there will not be any difficulties with customs that could slow the arrival of this music
in time for rehearsals—something which would be truly dreadful.
In my first letter to you (of April 6), I had asked if you had seen Mrs. Bliss and if you had spoken
to her on the subject of our last meeting here—which is to say the question of the second and
final payment. You never responded (I can only imagine everything you have going on inside
your head!). If you think of it, would you be so kind as to speak with her about it to speed up the
payment, which would do me a great service (especially now—God knows what the sickness of
my daughter and wife are costing me).
I impatiently await news of rehearsals and of the scores, if they arrive in time.
Fondly,
Your
I. Str

Monsieur I. Strawinsky
25 Fauborg St. Honoré
Paris, France
15 mai 1938
Cher Ami,
Il me faut
reconnaissants.

Dear Friend,
I have not been able to write you, because the life I lead is an impossible problem. But I must, all
the same, tell you what a joy the concert was at the Blisses’ on the 8th. I knew, but did not know
at all, the joy I would find in performing the Concerto—and upon listening to it, I have
understood once again [things that] I wouldn’t know how to tell you. I can’t express it, but such
loneliness is a certainty in my life.
And, after all the courses dedicated to your music, I believe that I understand all the better.
The Concerto was played honestly, well, very well—and was understood, I believe. There
remain many mistakes—and a few problems—I hope that you can wait for my return before
printing it, because it seems to me that a few passages should be modified in places (insufficient
repeats, the notation, etc.) and I cannot formulate the list at this time—I work almost night and
day.
How can I thank you? And how can I prove to you such great devotion? You have clarified
everything, not only through your works, but also by the clarity they project onto all music.
You have given us ears and a conscience! I cannot tear myself away from the Concerto—
everything has such an unexpected sound!
I think of you and your family with deep affection, and am close to you through these heavy,
anxious times. May God be with you and bring peace. This helplessness in the face of sickness is
so frightful.
Your
Nadia
[P.S.] You must know that the Blisses were deeply moved by the Concerto and are so thankful.
