146 South La Peer Drive
Los Angeles Calif. 90048
U.S.A.
Je vous embrasse bien fort, chère Nadia. Peut-être à bientôt.
Théodore

My Friend,
I believe you would have been touched to see how attentively and precisely our students
prepared your Mass. This is a group of young people who really know your work by heart.
The performance they gave was so clean, so sober, and so comprehensive. Among others, we
have worked on Dumbarton Oaks, the Symphonie, Deux Psaumes [sic], the Canticum Sacrum,
The Flood; you know what these works represent for me. It does one good to see young people
understanding works of such importance.
I send all my love and am always your,

Dear Friend,
Today I’m spending an unofficial Sunday close to you. For Baudelaire’s centenary, the Minister,
Mr. André Malraux, would like to organize an event to pay tribute to the musician who has
dominated, to say the least, this century. Therefore, would you agree to come to conduct the
French premiere of the work dedicated to the memory of Aldous Huxley along with the
Symphonie de psaumes and [other pieces] of yours that you would choose yourself?
In the event that you would be interested in accepting, under what terms would you like the
concert to be organized? What fee, how many rehearsals, and naturally, Bob?
Could you send me a night letter collect telling the dates, fee, number of rehearsals, Bob?
You would then receive an official letter confirming the invitation. Malraux attaches extreme
importance to this project as does Rufina Ampernova. He’ll write to you later, I’m so anxious to
read this work dedicated to the memory of Aldous Huxley.
Could you help me with this?
I send all my love.
Nadia B.

Mon Ami,
aider
Je vous embrasse bien fort.

My Friend,
Everyone pays you homage, only I will keep quiet. I who love you greatly, admire you and, I
believe, know you.
This is perhaps one of the reasons for my silence—having penetrated your thoughts, your most
secret being, could I betray what you never cease to hide. And then, I am incapable of saying the
things that are so serious, so important.
You have opened the doors that give true sense to music, to religion, to love—to courage?
I send my love, I pray to God for you, and express my profound tenderness. My respect cannot
be defined, it surpasses all measure.

Tous vous rendent hommage, moi seule me serai tue.

My friend, what joy in reading that you are so especially well, active, and especially interested, I
believe, in this new house where I dream of being [one day]. I spent such happy hours in the one
that will become . . . “the old one.”
No one in the world, and this is inevitable, has your vitality: you are always twenty years old.
You’ll remember that Clémenceau met with a gentleman who, stunned by his vivacity, said to
him, “You are so young, Mr. President!” Clémenceau was at that point 88 years old. His
instantaneous reply: “When one is young, it is forever.” But now, to more serious things.
You’re coming to Berlin, aren’t you? Think of poor Nicky who at first thought only of you, and
now sees this festival centered on you, put together for you; he is frustrated that the inspiration
[for the event] might be missing
But what am I saying is, if it is better for you to turn down this trip, then it goes without saying it
needn’t be thought of anymore. All the same, I’ll still wager that you’ll be in Berlin at the end of
September. I would only go there for you, truth be told.
Best wishes to Bob, to Vera, to you. All my tenderness as always. Fondly,
NB

embrasse.

My very dear Nadia,
I was deeply touched by your affectionate message and send you all my love.
I’ve finished (we are in the process of correcting the proofs in London) the composition for
Sacher (Basel*)—a sort of cantata (alto, tenor, choral, orch., and a narrator): A Sermon, a
Narrative, and a Prayer and have put myself to work on “Flood.” That one will be good to
compose.
Good health for the moment. Beginning March in Mexico (for ten days—Easter), where I am
conducting The Rite and Vera will have an exhibition of her gorgeous paintings.
Heartfelt wishes,
Yours,
I Str.
[P.S.] In July in Santa Fe—conducting Oedipus and Perséphone. End of August–September we
are planning to go to Australia with Bob. October in Berlin with Santa Fe Opera, with Radio
Brussels and BBC in London.

December 7, 1969
Dear Nadia,
Got home the day before yesterday from New York where I spent two weeks—I don’t wish to let
the days pass without writing to you, my dear Friend, at least a few lines, to open my very heavy
heart.
The state of my very old and dear Father distressed me: he is so fragile! They say he is doing
better—yes, better than June when it seemed his days were numbered. Let us join our prayers so
he might at least be spared the pain and sadness not caused by his physical state, alas! . . .
Physically, he is suffering a lot, mostly because of how terribly thin he is. Yet, he eats well
enough and happily. With regard to his morale, he seems immersed in his own impenetrable
world and [then], suddenly, will offer a reflection that denotes a certain mental lucidity, but these
instances are rare and brief. He says himself, for example, that he is conscious of no longer being
able to coordinate things in his head. He dozes or sleeps a large part of the day. The only
pleasure that remains to him—and this is deeply moving—is to listen to music. So, we played
him records. It’s very poignant to see him listening while following the score. With regard to the
atmosphere surrounding him, you know yourself, dear Nadia, how heavy, painful, and troubled it
is. My only consolation was to see how admirably well he is taken care of, insofar as the nurses
who surround him day and night (there are four) are perfect in kindness and attention. This Vera
knew how to successfully arrange for him, and I’m grateful to her. We would so like to come to
Paris and hear your news and talk about everything that is important to you, but I don’t believe it
will be possible before the end of January. I send my love.
Yours faithfully and wholeheartedly,

On dit
Alors on lui

My Friend,
A rather important letter today. The Polignac-Singer Committee is preparing a concert for the
celebration of Princess Winnie’s Centenary. We’ve come to ask you to write a work for the
concert, for a small orchestra of a maximum of fifteen instruments, perhaps with a narrator.
It goes without saying that the Committee asks you to state the terms under which you would
accept this commission. The concert would take place in October 1965. I can tell you that, in
principle, the committee will accept your conditions. The President, Mr. Heim, believes your
work alone would justify the entire program. Would you please tell me what you think about
this, because our plans depend on you. Must I tell you my hope.
(I felt such deep emotion seeing you and Vera again, and I admired Bob who put everything in
its place with such intelligence, such order. As for the work, how can one dare to speak of it. It is
essential and we are so happy to understand it. Each of your steps is so decisive.)
Fondly,
NB

Mon Ami
Lettre bien importante aujourd’hui.
NB

Dear Théodore,
How kind of you and Denise to have written me.
Death’s great mystery is around your Father, and whatever his faith and our submission may be,
it is certainly a painful time in its stress and severity.
I am with you constantly and send all my love,
NB.

NB.
