To be so close—and so far—I have arrived here, overcome by the tyranny of sleep—I am
regaining my spirits—I’ll see you upon my return from Villars, where I’m going to spend five
days with the Markevitch family. But if you could send me the addresses of your Father before
[he leaves Europe], you would make me very happy, as I must thank him. His writing seems to
show he is doing well. To think that he passed by Ballu and I was in Fontainebleau—never
suspecting that I was missing out on such a great joy!

Dear Vera,
It’s soon your Saint’s Day. Certainly, there is something naïve about sending wishes. But, do we
not remain naïve in the deepest of sentiments? From the bottom of my heart, I send you warmest
wishes—hoping that few responsibilities, [moments of] glory, fatigue, travels, and obligations
will deplete your marvelous energy. Certainly, you have a unique opportunity, but how heavy [it
is], and the melancholy of seeing the years accumulate, and their weight imposed on him and on
you.
Yet his genius renews itself by an almost unbelievable miracle. His Requiem for T. S. Eliot is a
masterpiece. It is as monumental as it is condensed. And everything remains clarified by him
who has carried the torch all these years. Always the same, always new.
May God keep you in His Peace
I send you both my love and am your

Thank you for your telegram, Dear Vera, Dear Igor. I am so sad to have not seen you Monday.
Words seem so weak to me and become sentimental so quickly. And I have difficulty saying
what my tenderness would nonetheless wish to express.
You are going to leave, but I cannot leave Europe this year, and much time will pass without us
seeing each other again. It is difficult for me [to accept it].
Every night here, I have heard your works all over, Dear Igor. I hope that you take a little
pleasure from all the joy we owe you and that you are happy to do so much with all that you
have been given. But forgive my nonsense.
Fond wishes. I love you with all my heart and am your
Nadia B.

Nadia B

How nice it is that you wrote to me. Sometimes we need a sign, and yours are [cause for]
celebration. Dear Friend, My dear Igor, I’ve so many things to tell you to which you are central.
Spoke at length with Rainier of Monaco. He is going to inquire about Villas that might suit you.
However, he has no buildings that could be put at your disposal. Yet I believe, nevertheless, that
you would have so many advantages in settling here. And [property values] are increasing at
such a pace that what we acquire one year quickly doubles in value. One of my friends who
bought a very nice apartment sold it two years later for more than double.
If it’s possible before I leave to visit the potential villas that would satisfy your programme, I
will see them and keep you up to date as quickly as possible.
My love to you both, a thousand good wishes for Bob, and I am wholeheartedly yours,
Nadia B.

My Dear Friend,
I’ve received numerous letters following Perséphone. You must have been, I believe, content
with this concert, with this program, with what you achieved for a performance. Father Fortier
(the one who was at Santa Barbara) wrote to me that the broadcast in Canada was marvelous.
What nostalgia at not being there!
You will receive a letter from Winifred Johnstone concerning the Lili Boulanger Foundation. I
believe that you’ll be able to sign the ballot sheet without reservation in support of Bhatia, a very
gifted young Hindu who is very sick, [and] whom this bursary would help so much. And for Per
Nørgard, a young Dane, who is a real musician. It seems to me that these two boys truly deserve
this award.
I won’t tell you again everything that keeps me close [to you]. My fond wishes to you both and a
thousand to Bob,
Your
Nadia

Mon Cher Ami,
Votre
Nadia

Dear Igor,
Many thoughts sent your way for March 2—so many thoughts for your work. We’ve just worked
on Threni, this marvel in which every note has been chosen and found.
I don’t want to bother you after you’ve started Noah [sic]. You are a world of energy, of
invention, and of courage—always taking up the struggle again.
I’m sad to have no news of you, but I understand.
I am fondly your,

Wherever these lines find you, My Friend, it will soon be your birthday and I cannot [even] give
you a kiss. What regret. But I nonetheless feel very close. I envision you engaged with new
problems—each work bringing along its own unknowns and demands. And this constant renewal
of your thought is a renewal of life. Never any repeats, always rebounding toward new
combinations. All of this is very mysterious and so clear once the work is completed.
You are constantly in my thoughts—what I wouldn’t give to see you. You’ll be in Berlin in
September if I could come. More and more I feel we have to seize at any price the moments that
are offered to us.
I don’t know how to write to you. You are too great for me, and I love you too much, but you
will understand that everything that [I send] to you is from the bottom of my heart.
My fond wishes, Dear Igor,
Nadia

Nadia
