My dear Nadia,
You letter moved me, touched me. I understand your reactions against the madness carrying the
world away. We cannot stop thinking about it, without arriving at a single solution (who would
have enough strength to oppose all this evil?). Day by day we make a point of solving the little
problems we need to in order to keep going, and so far, we are more or less succeeding.
As for myself, I’m writing to send you best wishes for your birthday; may all sorts of blessings
come to you . . . You know the place you occupy in our hearts, in our life. And shall I tell you
that in my teaching, which seems to be taking the form of a vocation, I strive to make clear to
others what you have made so evident to me?
I hope at last to find here the calm necessary for composing. I probably also need to learn to
write with less reserve. [The need to] control every moment, every combination, stops each of
my steps and forbids me from advancing. And I haven’t forgotten that one must do first and then
discuss afterward. I am striving to find this balance.
What a joy to have seen George and Art Sachs again—and Marthe Nalet who brought to these
distant environs something of the rue Ballu.
My very dear Nadia, Françoise, Jean and I are yours with all our hearts—
Always,
Soulima Stravinsky

Chère Nadia,
Votre lettre m’a ému, touché.
Toujours votre,
Soulima Stravinsky

Dear Mademoiselle,
I tried just now to call but was unable to reach you.
My father will be at home, in his Pleyel apartment, between 7 and 8 o’clock this evening. I
believe this is a good time for you, as you have told me. I spoke with Diantha yesterday evening
and I am now much more at ease. But, I very much hope that you will be able to give my father a
sense of this young girl, because I have complete confidence in God and faithfully believe that
what is clearly impossible right now will be done in its own time with His help.
Thank you again for everything you are doing for me.
Your ever-devoted student,

May 3, 1932
Dear Mademoiselle,
We were very touched by your kind thoughts for Easter and we thank you with all our hearts.
Thank you as well for your kind letter, which I am very embarrassed not to have answered until
today.
Is Madame Boulanger doing a bit better, is she suffering a bit less? I cannot express how much I
am affected by her long, painful suffering. I send my sympathy to you and to her.
I will probably see you again soon, which delights me greatly. I intend to come to Paris for a
couple of days at the end of May. Perhaps you will see my father beforehand because he leaves
for Paris this week to record L’Histoire du soldat and the Octuor.
I believe he wants to see you about me. I have every intention of seeing Philipp to get some
technical advice and some guidelines from him for my work. It needs to be done without
offending Madame Chailley at all and therein, it seems to me, lies the difficulty.
I am sure you will give me good advice about this and, in waiting to see you again soon, when I
can tell you all that I have done this winter, I send to you, my very dear Mademoiselle, my most
devoted affection and to Madame Boulanger my utmost respect.
Your
Sviatoslav Strawinsky

Votre,
Sviatoslav Strawinsky

My very dear Mademoiselle,
It is certainly much too late to wish you a Happy New Year. All the same, I wish you all the
happiness and health possible for the fifty weeks to come, as well as to Madame Boulanger,
while apologizing for my tardiness. It is because I recently had concerts in Switzerland from
which I have just returned for the holidays. We were profoundly touched by your good thoughts
and we thank you wholeheartedly.
I must come to Paris for the 25th, and on the 26th (it’s a Wednesday) rue Ballu? I have a lesson
with M. Philipp at 5 o' clock. I hope to see you again a little after 6 o’clock. If not, I will
telephone you, because I would so much like to see you again.
In this hope, please always remember, my dear Mademoiselle, my most grateful and respectful
affection,

Dear Nadia,
May these lines convey to you my very faithful thoughts which go out to you so often, and
particularly today on your birthday.
We have experienced from afar the creation of The Rake's Progress. Knowing that among all of
the indifferent or neutral ears there were your own is reassuring. The articles in all of tomorrow’s
newspapers and magazines have even given us an idea of what kind of event it was, what the
work [means] to Music and to History. I am sure that you and I think the same thing about this.
Times will change and prove it to those reluctant ones. But maybe they won’t be so numerous
this time around, or am I mistaken?
And now, here, a second university winter semester starts. We’ve taken root in this place. (Don't
smile, things take root quickly in fertile soil). We love this life. I love my students and find
myself in the best working conditions there are. Lots of concerts as well this year, like last year.
Françoise thinks I accept too many of them.
Could we come spend a few weeks in France next spring? It is our greatest desire, but we still
can’t decide on anything.
Jean has started school (first grade) and is distinguishing himself there by his natural abilities
(proud father speaking) as well as by his passionate temperament.
One of my former students, Patricia Hepner, is going to be in Paris this winter. She does not
know anybody there and I thought your guidance could be invaluable to her. Would you be so
kind as to welcome her when she telephones you? I’m also recommending her to Jacques
Février, who I hope will be able to follow her training for the competition in Brussels where she
hopes to perform this spring. Thank you in advance for what you might be able to do for her.
Françoise asks me to pass along her affectionate thoughts. I add to them Jean’s and, of course,
my own.
Always, your
Soulima.

Toujour, votre
Soulima.

My dear Nadia,
Oh, how your letter gave me such pleasure and I am so touched that you remembered my
birthday. I am filled with remorse after having let your birthday pass last year without sending
you my wishes—will you still accept them?
You are right. Without a doubt I need to write. I tell myself this often. Not so long ago I wrote
lots, and nothing came of it. If one could write in the moments lost or gained during a schedule
crammed full of teaching and concerts, that would be the trick. I still haven’t developed the
necessary concentration. Maybe one day? I'm not giving up on this.
From the end of September, we’ll be coming to spend next summer in Europe. We have you to
thank for all the emotions this stirs up in us. We are counting the days.
We are looking forward to The Rake in New York, it will be a grand event for us. Until now we
have only heard but a little snippet on the radio. Two songs sung by Schwarzkopf at a festival in
Holland, conducted by Markevitch. We have waited too long.
Jean is well. If it is true that it is better to have a difficult character than to have no character at
all, he has great things ahead of him.
Françoise joins me in sending you all of our affection,
Soulima

Soulima

Dear Nadia,
Here are my wishes for your birthday, your health and for your priceless work. May you
continue to create around you that unity of thought which is more necessary today than ever.
And it was so comforting to see you, even for such a short amount of time. So many things
weren’t said . . . At least I know that we always speak the same language, that the same values
are dear to us both.
These days I receive excellent news from my father, including the score for his Sextet (Clar.,
Horn, Bassoon, Piano, Viol, Vla, Cello). I read it and reread it, but that isn’t enough for me.
There are always great surprises for the ear with his music. Is it not that which is so often
missing from all other music? I send you fondest wishes, my dear Nadia, with all my affection.
Françoise and Jean join me in my wishes.

Sextet (Clar., Cor, Basson, Piano, Viol, Vla, Cello).
manque si souvent à toute d’autre musique ?

My dear Nadia,
Your words, your thoughts have touched me infinitely. I would like to tell you that we were also
very close to you, we are always, but most especially this month. And soon [we will have] the
joy of seeing you. But will you be in Paris at the end of June? I hope this with all my heart. We
arrive in Paris on June 12 and will stay there until the end of the month. Then we’re going to
spend two months in southern France and will leave again around September 1.
May this letter find you in good health. Wholehearted and fond wishes,
