Geneva
October 2, 1969
My very dear Nadia,
Thank you, thank you for your note and for your unfailing friendship toward my father and us.
Yes, the problems that are cropping up are so painful, and, as you say, critical in any plans, but
what and how should I feel when all access toward my father has been virtually blocked?! What
a tragedy, foremost for him, but also for us, his children . . . In such a situation we are powerless,
because what can we do that won’t provoke too much of a painful shock for him, even though I
know his deepest thoughts.
I have just received a heartbreaking letter from Milène. The poor girl has front row seats to this
tragedy. They are in New York (I mean my father) and plan to go to Paris around the 15th of this
month. Here is Milène’s address:
Mrs. André Marion
146 South La Peer Drive
Los Angeles Calif. 90048
U.S.A.
I send my heartfelt love, dear Nadia. Perhaps we’ll see each other soon,
Théodore

My dear and great Friend,
A single line from your letter tells us what you think, but what you tell us about it overwhelms
us…and you wrote to us by hand! Thank you from the bottom of my heart! You understand the
tragedy of the situation. When I wanted to go see my dear Father on June 18 for his birthday
after his operation (double operation) in New York, I received a response from Vera asking me
not to come for the moment . . . I don’t want to add any commentary, but you can imagine my
pain. My dear Father can no longer react, but he is perfectly aware of it and suffers profoundly
from it, that I know. I am close to him through prayer—with you, dear Nadia, we are close to
him, but [only] through prayer—and I thank you from the bottom of my heart that I can write
these lines to you.
Denise and I express to you our deepest commitment.
Your

Votre,
Théodore

My Friend,
I believe you would have been touched to see how attentively and precisely our students
prepared your Mass. This is a group of young people who really know your work by heart.
The performance they gave was so clean, so sober, and so comprehensive. Among others, we
have worked on Dumbarton Oaks, the Symphonie, Deux Psaumes [sic], the Canticum Sacrum,
The Flood; you know what these works represent for me. It does one good to see young people
understanding works of such importance.
I send all my love and am always your,

Dear Théodore,
What sadness in your letter, how sad it is to think of such a glorious, very old man who is
battling with death, even more with illness, the decline it brings, all seen by a mind still so lucid
it is capable of measuring his suffering, weakness, weariness, and the body’s rejection.
How much I think of you, of Denise who is suffering as well, of this helplessness where you both
are, and what is there to do, what to say, what to hope? May God support those who travel such a
difficult road.
The ceremony on Thursday was very moving and to feel that her name was there where she lived
a whole part of her life was, for me, very sweet. [Now people will] become aware of her work,
and I can greet death with tranquility. Her memory will not be abandoned!
I send you all my most tender love. May God keep you,
Nadia B.

Boulanger à Théodore Strawinsky
19 octobre 1968

October 15, 1968
My very dear Nadia,
It was upon arriving at the hotel in Holland, where we have settled for a few months, that I found
your letter addressed to Geneva . . . it followed us here where we were not! We were actually in
Switzerland at that time!! We could’ve had the pleasure of seeing you then. We were brought
back here by an emergency surrounding Denise’s mother, who had had an attack, and I had to
leave my work here (large frescoes in a church) abruptly to go back to Geneva, but our mail
continued to be delivered here. What bad luck for us, dear Nadia. How happy we would have
been to see you again, to discuss so many problems we keep in our hearts . . . And during our
unplanned stay in Switzerland, I heard from my sister, Milène, that my Father and Vera and
Robert Craft were in Zurich!! Oh! Dear Friend, there is so much distress in this, I cannot find the
words to write to you, but I know you can read between the lines. At moments, my dear Father
gives the impression that he is doing better, and finds with his intelligence some critical
responses, but it’s impossible to find any sort of happiness in his eyes. His legs don’t carry him
anymore, that you know, but not at all anymore . . . and here he is travelling: after Zurich it will
be Paris! My great, dear Friend, it’s a tragedy, but what can be done? Zurich was nonetheless
necessary so that Denise and I could have the great, great happiness of spending a few hours with
him, and he also found joy in it, so he told us. How comforting for a son’s heart. I know you
were told, dear Nadia, that it tired him to have visits—and I feel so sad for you. They are going
to go to Paris . . .
To finish off these heartfelt lines, I’ll tell you again, dear Nadia, how upset we were to have
missed you in Geneva, but I hope [we will see each other] in Paris . . . when? I don’t know
exactly.
With all our faithful attachment, Denise and I express to you our deepest affection and send
tender thoughts,
Théodore
P.S. We will be with you in thought, especially the day after tomorrow, the 17th, at the emotional
moment of noon. With you and all of your friends.

My Friend,
This morning there was an admirable performance of Le Sacre under the precise, alive, and true
direction of . . . Igor Stravinsky. And to think they argue: “[Is he a] conductor, yes or no?” And
while witnessing the [only] one who could give such a performance, with real connections, his
rhythms so perfectly set out and conducted. Sober, modest, and effective commentaries from H.
Barraud.
No literature sheds light on audible acts— honestly, intelligently. And he has rightly noted that
there was not one Stravinsky of yesterday and another of today, but one Stravinsky, for always,
who is always new. I suppose he will give [a performance of] recent works here, the Requiem
Canticles is a revelation for young people, not to mention those who are capable of hearing and
understanding.
I could go on and on, you give so much with work after work. Always new and always the same.
I do not cease dreaming of seeing you, alas, [and] I hope you know that I always am near to you
and to Vera.
Nadia
[P.S.] May God keep you and give you patience in the face of suffering.
[P.P.S.] And many kind thoughts for Bob.

Mon Ami,
