Wherever these lines find you, My Friend, it will soon be your birthday and I cannot [even] give
you a kiss. What regret. But I nonetheless feel very close. I envision you engaged with new
problems—each work bringing along its own unknowns and demands. And this constant renewal
of your thought is a renewal of life. Never any repeats, always rebounding toward new
combinations. All of this is very mysterious and so clear once the work is completed.
You are constantly in my thoughts—what I wouldn’t give to see you. You’ll be in Berlin in
September if I could come. More and more I feel we have to seize at any price the moments that
are offered to us.
I don’t know how to write to you. You are too great for me, and I love you too much, but you
will understand that everything that [I send] to you is from the bottom of my heart.
