What kind of postcard is this?

0_books_-_patrick_thomson_view_album_of_edinburgh_princes_street_looking_west_1024.jpg

One of the earliest pictures of Princes Street (Circa 1890s)

The postcard was made by the “Philco” publishing company, Holborn place, London. W. C. of series no. 2S10 - printed at one of their works in Germany. They are known for publishing many different types of artist signed cards and photo-based cards as colotypes and photogravures (which are photo printing processes), and are noted for 3 large sets representing faith, hope and charity.

Although the photographer of this particular picture is unknown the earliest known picture of this popular landscape (part-street, part-park, part monument) view can be seen from circa 1890.

This popular landscape view postcard was most likely sold as souvenirs at this particular spot (which may be the case for the sender of this postcard) and was indirectly or directly also a form of advertising the particular spot and therefore, Scotland.
