What can we learn from this postcard?

From this postcard, it clear the importance of Highland Clans. Specifically, the MacPherson Clan has a rich history which is shown in many aspects of this postcard. The tartan in the background is the standard clan tartan (Clan MacPherson Assoc. 6), also called the Breacandearg(Clan MacPherson Assoc. 12). The map in the bottom right shows the land they conquered called Badenoch (Macpherson 17), in the region of Inverness. In order to acquire this land, the MacPherson Clan put the Clan Cummings and Clan MacNiven through bloodshed (Macpherson 17). The MacPherson clan had a reputation of fighting and the most “stirring events in Highland history” (Macpherson 28). This reputation is well represented in their arms. First, a man in battle wearing the traditional battle apparel is shown wearing a long shaffron shirt that flowed to the knees which was tied between thighs during battle (Clan MacPherson Assoc. 11). Next, the bloody hand and dagger represents the bloodshed between the MacPherson clan and Clan Cummings in order to gain land (Macpherson 51).

The motto “touch not the cat but the glove” translates to “touch not the ungloved cat with claws exposed” (Macpherson 52). The gloved part of a cat with the fur is soft but the underside is dangerous claws (Macpherson 52). In war like attitude, you always have to be prepared for the worst. This relates to the MacPherson Clan very well since they were known for their fighting behaviour. Through the postcard it is clear that Scottish Clan Postcards is a rich resource when it comes to the historical nature of clans. The tartan, arms and motto are well displayed and commemorated. We can see postcards were able to inform others nationally and internationally, as this postcard was sent from Edinburgh,  Scotland to Maine, USA. Postcard that included Scottish Clans and Scottish history were used in order to gain tourism to the country. Maybe those apart of the MacPherson Clan and others seeing this postcard may want to go visit and experience the heritage of the MacPherson Clan.
