What kind of postcard is this?

"Leith, Imperial Dock". This is the back of another postcard found in the Caledonia Series from J.A. McCulloch & Co.

This Gordon tartan postcard was published by J.A McCulloch & Co. (est. 1903) in the early 1900s (Petrulis 2019). It is one of the many postcards found in the Caledonia Series, which involves the work of other companies such as the Davidson Brothers and Hartmann (Stubbs 2019). Most of the postcards in this series contain photographs of landscapes in Central Edinburgh (Stubbs 2019). However, this photo was taken at Dunoon, located in Argyll & Bute, Scotland (Petrulis 2019), opposite of where Edinburgh is located. It overlooks Dunoon Pier and Pier Esplanade (which is the walkway located beside the main pier), as well as the Holy Loch. The photos found in McCulloch's postcards were mostly based on photos taken by C. Reid of Warshaw (Petrulis 2019). It's uncertain whether or not they took this black and white photo of Dunoon Pier, found in this specific postcard. It was printed in Gorgie, Edinburgh; specifically at the Hillside Printing Works (Petrulis 2019)

A close-up of the J.A. McCulloch & Co. crest found on most of the postcards published under this company.

Just from looking at the postcard, we can gather so much information about it. Found in the center of the postcard is a photo of Dunoon Pier and Pier Esplanade. The front of the postcard has a thick border with the tartan that belongs to the Gordon clan. It is a Gordon clan postcard, as mentioned before, with what seems to be the Scotland flags found on the bottom left and top right corners of the photograph. What we can tell from the back of this postcard is that it was part of the Caledonia Series, as mentioned before. The crest at the top of the postcard is the crest of J.A McCulloch & Co. (as shown on the left), and found in the crest is a banner that reads 'Caledonia Series'. This feature helps differentiate which postcards are part of the series and which ones are not. This postcard was sent from Dunoon on July 9, 1914, and is being sent off to Galt, Ontario in Canada.
