My postcard: contemporary perspectives

Macpherson Men.jpg

In 2019, members of the MacPherson Clan continue to celebrate their heritage. The MacPherson clan has a 27th hereditary chief, Honorable Sir William Alan MacPherson of Cluny and Blairgowrie (Weiner 25). His role is more symbolic (Weiner 25) compared to the power a chief of a clan had in the past. The current chief does not hold any type of power over the law (Weiner 25). The role of a clan currently for social gathering consisting of people who share a common heritage (Weiner 25). The Canadian Branch of the Clan MacPherson Association organizes an annual gathering for all members (“Canadian Branch”). Canada is the 2nd oldest brand outside of Scotland, New Zealand is the first (“Canadian Branch”). This postcard holds a lot of sentimental value to the MacPherson clan as it celebrates and remembers their rich heritage. This postcard includes aspect of the clan from the tartan, motto and traditional arms.

This also holds sentimental value to those who sent and received the postcard. We know that the postcard was sent and based off of the postage stamp it was sent on August 26th/14. We can assume that this was sent in 1914 when the circulation of postcards was the greatest with over 880 million postcards posted (Pritchard and Nigel 55). The message on the postcard is legible although some words are hard to make out. But we do know it is a message sending good wishes. Something else worth noting that this postcard is addressing a McPherson. The MacPherson name could be spelled McPherson depending on the preference of the families (Macpherson 9). So it may be, that the recipient of this postcard is part of the Clan MacPherson but the family chose the other spelling at some point in their history. This postcard holds a lot of value to MacPherson Clan presently as it comemorates their heritage.
