Historical Context

In the 1940’s, many women were forced to go to work instead of being homemakers like they were in previous decades, because of the husbands going to war (Bored Panda, 2010). Because of this, this pamphlet was targeted for women with children who had busy lives, because of work.

The colours however, contrary to the interpretation above, show that there is no clear gender being shown. Yes, there are two women on the cover and inside cover, but the blue and white colours show that even men could make the recipes for their families, which probably isn’t very likely though.

There are a lot of these pamphlets that can be found coming from the 1940’s and 1950’s that advertise company’s products. This became very popular in this time. In the pamphlet, the company gives more space for advertisements for their other products than space for the actual recipes that the pamphlet was made for. This shows a newly popularized advertisement strategy that may not be present in some other pamphlets from the time.
