Value

This specific recipe booklet has not been found online as to what price it is currently valued, so the monetary value is difficult to conclude. There is a similar booklet known as The Five Roses Cook Book (Classic Canadian Cookbook), that appears to be much more commonly researched.  This cookbook is currently being sold for $9.60 on eBay ("15 results for The Five Roses Cookbook"). With this information, we can make an assumption that these cookbooks from this company can be valued anywhere from $5.00 to $20.00. On the third page of the pamphlet itself in pencil markings is a price point marked $6.00.  A prediction can be made that this piece of ephemera was sold to the University of Guelph Special Archives collections for that price.  Because no other recollection of this artifact has yet to be found online, we can only assume this as the value.  Although it is difficult to tell, located on the fifth page of the pamphlet is another pencil marking.  The writing is difficult to read, but there is possibility another price point, perhaps $10, or $20.  Otherwise, this could very well be a code or identification number.

Observing the research value, this pamphlet can aid to those researching the life of an average household during the 1920s.  Because of the different ingredients and instructions listed, researchers are able to determine important information such as the food that was available, and the baking equipment that was commonly found in homes.  This also can tell researchers what sort of marketing techniques appealed to households.  In this case, the main technique would be directing towards emotions and family.

This pamphlet may also hold sentimental value, but only in specific cases.  As of right now, as it is currently owned by the University of Guelph, it most likely does not hold any sentimental value, but considering the first owners of this item might possibly be different.  Baking is a very joyous activity for many, and can be seen as a bonding experience between family and friends.  Specifically with the title directing towards mothers and children, this recipe booklet could quite possibly hold a lot of sentimental value to the first owners, because of the story behind it and the relationship the owner might have had with their own mother or child.
