Origin

The company “Presto” was first founded in 1905 in Eau Claire, Wisconsin (National Presto Industries, Inc, 2015). The company started off with only manufacturing “canner retorts” which was another word for the product that was formally known as pressure canners (National Presto Industries, Inc, 2015). The company then teamed up with other organizations in order to expand their project and make it better by producing thirty-gallon canners for the use of hotels. Following that, the idea of home canning came into the picture. In 1915 ten-gallon models were being manufactured in order to create a more meaningful purpose in a home environment. The company really took off in 1917 after the United States Department of Agriculture realized that pressure canning was the safest way of canning low-acid foods because it does not endanger people when it comes to food poisoning (National Presto Industries, Inc, 2015) During this time, the company worked it’s way up to being the largest manufacturers of cast aluminum cooking utensils in the world. In order to meet the needs of the consumer, in 1939 the company popularized the first saucepan-style pressure cooker, which they named “presto” (National Presto Industries, Inc, 2015). The pamphlet “when you cook with a presto cooker” was made during this time in Wallaceburg, Ontario. It represented the important features of this product and why housewives should buy it. Through advertisements such as these, presto cooker facilities dramatically increased in 1941, making the most money in leading stores throughout the country (National Presto Industries, Inc, 2015).
