Historical Context

This pamphlet was written during World War II (1943) in the United States. In 1941, the US joined the war after the Pearl Harbour naval fleet in Hawaii was bombed by Japan. By 1942, a system for rationing out everything from sugar to gasoline and rubber was instituted. Housewives were given the task of nourishing their families with less options. Families started planting "victory gardens" so they could have fresh fruit and vegetables, as well as wheat for bread. (History.com staff, 2010)

This pamphlet was released after the ration program started so that the Westinghouse employees would stay healthy and strong to keep producing goods to "win the war." It taught wives about nutrition, and gave them several recipes that could be made on the limited foods they had access to.
