Value

The monetary value of this recipe pamphlet today is unknown because there do not seem to be any similar products available. However, there is a pencil marking on the recipe pamphlet that may indicate it was sold to the University of Guelph Library for $15 (Arabian Steed, n.d., p. 5).

There is a possibility that this recipe pamphlet could have sentimental value. This recipe pamphlet romanticizes Arabian culture. Reading this pamphlet could have provoked someone's interest in the mystical and exotic land of Iraq the company presented. As explored in the Origins section, the fairytale-like design elements of the pamphlet could have provided comfort to Americans who felt unsafe in their own country. The recipes in the pamphlet could also hold sentimental value if someone had positive memories associated with making or eating the included date recipes.

The pamphlet also could potentially have research value. The pamphlet could be used, as it was in this exhibit, as a piece of ephemera that is telling of cultural values. For example, as was discussed in the Historical Context section, the recipe pamphlet could prompt further investigations into America during the Second World War. It could also indicate that America was interested in exotic and unknown places when this pamphlet was produced. The historical section of the recipe pamphlet could potentially be used to gather additional information about Iraq during the time period of the recipe pamphlet, but researchers who choose the use the pamphlet to find facts and statistics must be cautious about overstating its credibility. The pamphlet has no citations, and there is no way to verify if any of the information is accurate. For example, the pamphlet's claim that Iraq “produces yearly 100,000 tons from 7 million palms” (Arabian Steed, n.d., p. 2) cannot be verified because there is no available or reliable data on date production before around 1970, and the information is not cited on the recipe pamphlet.
