After analyzing this ephemera, there are three major concepts that can suggest the period in which it was produced. There are many other concepts and indications to what social norms took place at this time period, although there were three major ones that were quite evident throughout the entire pamphlet. Those of which include the target audience as well as the customers personal interests within Saskatchewan.
First, women were the ones that would cook for the families and prepare the meals, which was shown within visuals through the pamphlet, as well as through the time period in which the catalogue was produced. Within the time period in which this piece of ephemera was produced, women were the ones to do all the house work as well as to ensure there was a ready and delicious meal on the table for the family. Since this was also a family oriented pamphlet due to the portion sizes, it is clear through visuals that this was targeted towards mothers and wives.
Secondly, the product was produced targeting Indigenous people, this was again shown through visuals as well through the title and name of the actual pamphlet. When targeting a specific group of customers, it is easier to sell more of the product as people will be driven to something promoted by their religion and culture. Therefore, within this catalogue it was clearly targeted towards indigenous, showing they played a large role in the society at that certain time period.
Lastly, the pamphlet shows that fish must have been a very common meal or appetizer at this time as there were many different recipes and when taking into account the short time period it was produced and in stores shows there was always something to expand on. As well as fish were always and continued to be an enjoyable food as people continued to buy the product, as if people did not have an interest in fish, the company would not have produced yearly catalogues if no one was buying them.
As well as within the time period in which this product was being produced, was soon after World War II. That being said, this cause many complication for the fishing companies all across the world as there was difficulties catching fish, because one could be seen as the enemy. (StatisticsCanada, 2009) People were effected by enemy action and often had their boats shot, causing them to sink as well as many people were killed int he process of this as well. In Britain there was only 35% of the regular amount of fish brought in that year, during the time of the war. Therefore the war a profound effect not he fish supply and ones ability to catch these fish, as several fisherman lose their lives while trying to continue on with their livelihood. Not only did enemy action play a large role in effecting the fish supply but the mines that were built by the army’s did as well as sea mines sunk more fishing vessels then any other weapon. This shows there were several obstacles that had to be overcome in order to produce this product, as well as there were complications that had to be solved in order to keep the success the company had produced in the past.
