Origin

This piece of ephemera titled Chief Northern, King of Foods was obtained at the University of Guelph Library from the ephemera collection.

The ephemera that I analyzed could be classified as a medium size brochure, with the measurements of 8 7/8” in length and 5 7/8” in width. The pamphlet is very delicate and contains a very bold theme throughout the book, in terms of colours, pictures, and fonts. This is a very visual pamphlet with bright colours on the front of it, to catch peoples attention, while carrying these bright colours throughout he entire book. The main colours are bright blue and bright orange, which are accompanied by several images, in which there is at least one image on every page. The visuals represent the values and targets of the pamphlet, as they are mainly of the Indigenous people, different fish dishes offered within, and families, mainly being women cooking the dishes as in this time period women were obligated to stay home and do the cooking, cleaning, and house chores. With sample meal pictures being provided, it allows for the person reading or using the recipes to get a sense of what the dish is supposed to and could look like when it is finished and ready to serve. The pamphlet contains several different font styles, to keep things exciting and intriguing while going through the pages, while still obtaining the bright colour scheme. The visuals within the pamphlet portrayed a lot about the intentions of this ephemera and who it would be aimed towards, as well as the reasoning for it being made. Majority of the visuals were different types of fish, showing the variety in which this pamphlet provides and how it can be targeted to may different interests. The format of the pamphlet was very easy to follow as it was labelled very specifically, with the different types of font and colouring making it very easy to maneuver.

This piece of ephemera originated in Saskatchewan, Canada at the head office in the third-largest city in the province being Prince Albert. Since Prince Albert is directly beside the banks of the North Saskatchewan River, it is identifiable that there were several spots for fishing opportunities as well as this implies where the name of this pamphlet was created. This pamphlet was produced in 1954, with a one year span of the catalogue, which is stated on the front page. The company that produced this pamphlet was the Saskatchewan Fish Marketing Service, in which this specific brand was the Chief Northern, King of Foods. This product has a stamp near the end of where it was to be shipped to which was 2840 Albert Street in Regina, showing this product must have been distributed ins several different cities and parts of Saskatchewan. With the year in which it as produced was 1954, there has been many changes to the restrictions of fisherman in Saskatchewan, as in April of 2012 the Saskatchewan government decided to remove itself from the Freshwater Fish Marketing Act. Removing themselves from this act essentially means the fishers were no longer required to sell their catches to Freshwater Fish.

This product was made at the head office in Saskatchewan, as stated on the back of the pamphlet in a stamp. Although, the product was produced by The Saskatchewan Fish Marketing Service, in which  they produce several different catalogues and update these catalogues each year. As stated within the previous paragraph, the item was entailed to be shipped to 2840 Albert Street in Regina, then distributed to different parts of saskatchewan from there. The pamphlet was targeted towards the older generation and at the specific time period, women as at this time the women were supposed to stay home and take care of the house, including that of preparing the dinner for the family. Therefore it was targeted towards women as the were to cook the dinner for the family, as this is a very family oriented catalogue as all of the portion sizes were meant for a larger group of people. Another indication of this being targeted towards women would be the visuals throughout it, as there are several of women cooking the meals. This pamphlet also contains several images of Indigenous peoples, therefore it is targeted towards there people and people who obtain that culture. This entails that the pamphlet contains several dishes that are traditionally eaten within the Indigenous community as it targeted towards their religion and interests. As well as on the second page of the pamphlet there is a large visual stating there is a money back guarantee to all customers, this suggests they know their product will be a success if prepared correctly and effectively. This also drives people to purchase this product, as if there is a money back guarantee, the product is good quality and will be enjoyed. As well as this product is targeted towards those who value the quality of their food because the pamphlet states this food will be high quality and very intriguing to all.
