Origins

This pamphlet was published in 1954 by The Home Service Department of The Canada Starch Company, and was distributed in Montreal and Toronto. The pamphlet was created as promotional material for the Canada Starch Company, with recipes and “kitchen tricks” emphasizing the company’s products. It could have been an insert in a magazine, or a free circular distributed by mail or available in grocery stores.

Based on a WorldCat search of publications attributed to the Canada Starch Company, pamphlets of this nature were produced since at least the 1910s, and likely even earlier—a pamphlet titled “How to Save Sugar: New Sugar-Saving Recipes for the Wartime Housekeeper” was published sometime during the first world war. This continued until at least the late 1970s; a 32-page compilation of “Our Best Recipes since 1858” was published in 1979. Though few copies survive, the regularity of publication of the Canada Starch Company pamphlets meant that it likely became a respected source of recipes, and would have been preserved in private kitchens and recipe collections, not only in archival collections such as Guelph’s “Canadian Cookbook Collection.”
