This pamphlet was produced by the Canadian Department of Agriculture in 1943, later revised in 1962 (Canada, “Publications” 173). It was created with aid from the Honourable James Garfield Gardiner, indicated by his name on the bottom of the cover page. This version is the original, as Gardiner obtained the title of Right Honourable in 1947 following his introduction into the Privy Council (Canada, “James”).
James G. Gardiner served as the Minister of Agriculture in Saskatchewan from 1935 to 1958, recognized for his efforts to ensure the economic support of farmers during his lengthy tenure. He had previously held the role of Premier of Saskatchewan in 1926, and again in 1934, though his ultimate desire was to obtain a federal cabinet seat (“Gardiner, James Garfield.”). The war effort was close to Gardiner as his son was killed in action amidst the Dieppe Raid on August 19, 1942 (Canada, “ War Memorial.”).
