Value

What is its ‘value’?

Sentimental value

The value to John H. Sleeman; is mostly a sentimental one as he decided to collect and then give the Sleeman collection to the UofG library to preserve. But he also gave them to show and remind the future generations of the history of Guelph and the people in it.

Monetary value

Searching popular online shops, the price of beer labels of similar time frames as the 'XXX Porter' is usually around '0.99-5.00 usd'. Not really that valuable at all in terms or the monetary value, wasn't made to be long lasting or valuable in this sense.

Research value

This article did not provide me much about where the actual beer label was made. But to professional researchers and historians, this artifact could show the different technological advances in lithography Also their knowledge of adhesives and the array of materials they know how to produce, use and how well they did it in that time.

In my opinion, it holds the most value in this category he information on this article prodives a starting point for research opportunities and for questions such as 'Who is G. Sleeman?', 'What's his story? What about his families story?' Its endless!

Its value to me...

This project and item has grown on me greatly. I'm an International student and I came to Canada to experience and learn more about it's culture and what better way to do that by looking at beer! Beer is more than just a 'malt beverage', it takes special practise and time to create and by researching I've realised the so many different factors needed to take into consideration. For example, the style of beer is not all that matters, the way the style of beers are made don't just rely on the ingredients, it also depends on the temperature and the way of collecting. I also have gained a new found love and appreciation for the google patent search tool, it's amazing to read up on the inventions people have made over time.

I very much appreciate all the support given by my colleagues, I've learnt so much and can't thank the staff in the library archives and Mr. James enough on providing me the opportunity to do this project in my first semester of University!
