What can a ribbon tell us about the past? Often challenging to research, they are conspicuous markers of identity, membership, and achievement.  They persist to this day as ways we telegraph who we are and what we have done: what uses did they serve in the past?  This section explores that question, and charts their transition to pieces of remarkable research material.
