Recognized as Scotland's capital city since around the 15th century, it is the location of the government, parliament and supreme courts. The Palace of Holyroodhouse, in the city, serves as the offical seat of the monarch in Scotland. It is the second most populous city in Scotland and seventh in the United Kingdom. It is home to one of the world's most elite universities, University of Edinburgh, and has been a UNESCO World Heritage site since 1999.
Discovered by King David I at the beginning of the 12th century and first built in the early 16th. The palace that stands today was built in the years 1671-1678. The palace is located onthe other side of the city from Edinburgh Castle but is, similarly, open to the public; unless Queen Elizabeth II or other members of the Royal Family are there for their anual week-long trip at the beginning of summer.
