Making it in Canada

RASPBERRY KIWIFRUIT AND BANANA SALAD WITH LIME DRESSING

Canada is a major producer, exporter and importer of an immense variety of agricultural and food products ranging from processed foods with global value chains to local, farm-based value chains.  In this section, I share 3 of my research insights and assess to what extent our recipe can be made from Canadian agricultural and food products.

The kiwi fruit I used for this recipe was imported from New Zealand. New Zealand is the third largest producer of kiwi fruit in the world behind Italy which is second, and mainland China which is first. Australia, while known for kiwi fruit, is not a large exporter of the kiwi fruit. Canada does apparently produce a small amount of kiwi fruit, but all the kiwi fruit I found was from either New Zealand or Italy.

The limes I used for this recipe are from the USA, which is only the seventh largest producer of limes in the world but still produces a large amount of lime. The limes were a little hard to locate however. Several grocery stores did not have any in stock.

The raspberries used in this recipe were grown in Canada. Canada is the ninth largest producer of raspberries in the world. These raspberries were grown in Ontario in my own garden. Wild raspberry bushes are common all over Canada and my parents and I transplanted some into a garden to have a reliable source of raspberries.

In summary, 5 of the 7 ingredients I needed are produced in Canada, while the other 2 can be purchased without much difficulty. All the ingredients were available, so no substitutions were necessary.
