About this recipe

MINCE & TATTIES

Scottish cuisine is both practical and delicious. Blood or black pudding is a traditional European dish made from sheep and/or pigs blood, suet, oats, liver and spices in a sausage-like casing (Bender, 2014). The addition of this unique ingredient in Mince & Tatties really gives the dish an authentic Scottish quality.

The British Table is a cookbook written by an American who explored the U.K. finding recipes native to British cultures. The cookbook is organized by course and each course is categorized into smaller groupings of ingredients such as meat, seafood etc.

Mince & Tatties is similar to Shepherd's Pie, but is not in casserole form. Ground beef and potatoes are popular in traditional Scottish dishes because those ingredients were inexpensive and easily accessible in the past. The addition of the black pudding may seem adventurous, but is more acceptable to skeptical Canadians when disguised in the ground beef.
