Making it in Canada

WIENER SCHNITZEL

Canada is a major producer, exporter and importer of an immense variety of agricultural and food products ranging from processed foods with global value chains to local, farm-based value chains.  In this section, we share 3 of our research insights and assess to what extent our recipe can be made from Canadian agricultural and food products.

The veal cutlets used in our recipe were slaughtered and produced Toronto, Canada. Canadian cattle production is ranked in the top 10 globally.

We learned that Canada does not produce any lemons, and so we must get our whole supply imported.  We used a Canadian brand of lemon juice, so it seems the juice was manufactured in Canada.

The recipe called for salad oil, and after looking up the definition it means any oil, so we chose to use Canola oil as it is commonly used for frying is cost effective and is Canada’s oil.  Originally named ‘rapeseed’ oil, this oil is produced mostly in Europe, but Canada is the world’s third largest producer

In summary, ten of the eleven ingredients we needed are produced in Canada, while the other one could be purchased without much difficulty. None of the ingredients were not available. These ingredients are surprisingly very easy to get in Canada, making this German recipe extremely Canadian friendly.
