Making it in Canada

STIR FRIED PORK AND PINEAPPLE

Canada is a major producer, exporter and importer of an immense variety of agricultural and food products ranging from processed foods with global value chains to local, farm-based value chains.  In this section, we share 3 of our research insights and assess to what extent our recipe can be made from Canadian agricultural and food products.

Pineapple: The top 10 producers of pineapple are mostly from Americas and Asia, except Ghana and Nigeria. The pineapple we used is produced from Costa Rica and we chose a cored one for convenience in our cooking process. Canada does not produce pineapples but they are easily purchased almost everywhere in Canada.

Pork: Canada is among the world’s top ten pork producers so it is easy to get pork from domestic sources.

Chili: We used jalapenos, which were labelled as a product from Canada, and indeed Canada is the world’s tops 40 producers.

In summary, 5 of the 12 ingredients we needed are produced in Canada, while the other 7 can be purchased without much difficulty.
