Making it in Canada

BRUSCHETTA

Canada is a major producer, exporter and importer of an immense variety of agricultural and food products ranging from processed foods with global value chains to local, farm-based value chains.  In this section, I share 3 of my research insights and assess to what extent my recipe can be made from Canadian agricultural and food products.

This first value chain insight I found shows that Italy is the second highest producer of olives in the world. This may be due to the adequate climate for olive growth and the high demand for fresh olive oil throughout the country.

The second analysis of the value chain demonstrates the world’s production and yield of garlic. From 1994-2014, there has been a steady rise in consumption, with a small peak occurring around 2008.

The final analysis of the value chain shows the production and yield of tomatoes in the world. From 1994-2014 there is a steady rise in production and yield.

In summary, 6 of the 7 ingredients I needed are produced in Canada, while the other one can be purchased without much difficulty.
