Making it in Canada

SPAGHETTI AND MEATBALLS

Canada is a major producer, exporter and importer of an immense variety of agricultural and food products ranging from processed foods with global value chains to local, farm-based value chains.  In this section, we share 3 of our research insights and assess to what extent our recipe can be made from Canadian agricultural and food products.

Canada’s cattle production is among the world’s top 10. Canada produces veal; more than enough for our recipe.

Cow’s milk can be processed to form many products such as fermented cheeses, cream, butter and yogurt. Parmesan cheese can be produced in Canada. However, it is widely imported due its popularity and frequent use.

Canada is also one of the world’s largest pork producers, which provides plenty of the ground pork as options for our recipe to make the meatballs.

In summary, the 3 main macronutrient (fat, protein and sugars) sources are widely available in Canada. Really, 11 of 12 ingredients can be, and are produced in Canada. Parmesan cheese is the only ingredient that is widely imported. However, its use is so prominent in western cuisine that it is abundant in most grocery stores selling dairy products.
