Making it in Canada

TAIWANESE MINCED PORK RICE

Canada is a major producer, exporter and importer of an immense variety of agricultural and food products ranging from processed foods with global value chains to local, farm-based value chains.  In this section, we share 3 of our research insights and assess to what extent our recipe can be made from Canadian agricultural and food products.

The top two producers for pork are China and United States of America. Pork is a traditionally ingredient in China. Canada is also a significant pork producer, and exporter

The top two producers of rice are China and India, where rice is a main component of their meals. Rice is is not produced in Canada and all the rice sold in Canada is imported from overseas.

The top 10 producers of onions, shallots and green are Japan, Korea, Mainland China, New Zealand, Nigeria, Turkey, Thailand, Iraq, Tunisia, and Taiwan. The production of onions, shallots and greens are produced in warmer to mild climates as opposed to the harsh winters found in regions such as in North America and Europe. There is easy access to these ingredients in Canada, and some are also grown here.

In summary, 7 of the twelve ingredients we needed are produced in Canada, while the other 5 can be purchased without much difficulty. None of the ingredients were not available, and required us to make substitutions.
