Making it in Canada

MINCE & TATTIES

Canada is a major producer, exporter and importer of an immense variety of agricultural and food products ranging from processed foods with global value chains, to local, farm-based value chains. In this section, we share three of our research insights and assess to what extent our recipe can be made from Canadian agricultural and food products.

The organic steel cut oats we used were manufactured in the USA. Canada was #2 in world production of oats in 2014, after Russia and before Poland.

The lean ground beef was prepared for a local grocery store, and was most likely a product of Canada. However, we could not confirm this. The countries that produce the most cattle are the USA, Brazil, China, Argentina and Australia, in order. In 2014, Canada was ranked 10th.

We also analyzed potatoes. The mashed potato puree mix that we used was a product of the U.S. The top producers of potatoes in the world are China, India, and Russia, although as the world’s 17th largest producer, Canada trades potatoes as well.

In summary, 7 of the 9 ingredients in our recipe are produced in Canada. However, we did purchase items that were not produced in Canada as they were less costly. We substituted stone-ground Scottish oats with steel-cut organic oats as we could not find stone-ground Scottish oats easily in Guelph, Ontario.
