Making it in Canada

MEAT CROQUETTES

Canada is a major producer, exporter and importer of an immense variety of agricultural and food products ranging from processed foods with global value chains to local, farm-based value chains. In this section, we share 3 of our research insights and assess to what extent our recipe can be made from Canadian agricultural and food products.

Beef is easily accessible worldwide and is commonly consumed around the globe. Canada is ranked 10th in the production of beef and in 2016 Canadian consumers purchased roughly 18kg of beef per person per year. This large number suggests that beef is easily accessible throughout Canada, and we had no issues obtaining the beef needed for this Dutch recipe.

Milk is a staple ingredient in many countries across the world, and it is heavily consumed in the Netherlands. Due to milk being an essential ingredient in the Meat Croquette recipe, the accessibility and affordability of this product in Canada is essential in order to successfully produce this recipe. In regard to the production of milk, Canada ranks 10th. This further suggests the high availability of dairy products to Canadian consumers.

Flour is a commonly used ingredient in many countries around the world, and it is an essential ingredient in recipes such as bread, pastries, and cakes. Flour happens to be a main ingredient in the Dutch recipe of Meat Croquettes and therefore the accessibility of it in Canada is crucial in order to make this recipe. Flour products in Canada happen to be fortified with essential nutrients such as folic acid, iron, and B vitamins, making a high consumption of flour beneficial for Canadians.

In summary, 11 of the 12 ingredients we needed are produced in Canada, while the other 1 can be purchased without much difficulty (nutmeg). None of the ingredients in our recipe were unavailable and therefore no substitutions had to be made.
