Making it in Canada

SZARLOTKA

Canada is a major producer, exporter, and importer of an immense variety of agricultural and food products ranging from processed foods with global value chains to local, farm-based value chains. In this section I share 3 of  my research insights and assess to what extent this recipe can be made from Canadian agricultural and food products.

This recipe is perfect to make in Guelph, Toronto and basically anywhere in the province. Most of the ingredients like apples, flour, and eggs you can get at the Guelph farmer’s market or any farmer’s market anywhere. Things like sugar, vanilla sugar, and baking powder will be store bought while the margarine and sour cream can be from both.

The cooking margarine and vanilla sugar were Polish products bought from a Polish grocery store but can very easily be substituted with shortening and some vanilla extract.

Szarlotka can be made anywhere with products from almost any area of the world. There aren’t any rare or necessarily expensive ingredients which make it very accessible to first world countries. This has a high degree of using Canadian ingredients as most of the ingredients were processed and bought here in Ontario.

In summary, seven of the eight ingredients I needed are produced in Canada, while the other two can be purchased without much difficulty. None of the ingredients were not available.
