About this recipe

BUTTER, CHEESE, AND PICKLED HERRING

Swedish cuisine has traditionally been very open to foreign influences. Examples include the influence of French cuisine in the béchamel-like sauces and the use of Japanese soy sauce. Many traditional Swedish dishes also employ simple and contrasting flavours such as meatballs paired with a brown cream sauce.

The IKEA cookbook is used to promote the IKEA products. In this cookbook, there are 74 simple recipes, which are all based around Swedish classics like meatballs, herring, salmon, pancakes, sandwiches and sweet things; many of these, can of course, be purchased at IKEA. The photos found in this cookbook are simple and clear and focus only on the food and ingredients.

This recipe is a simple classic Swedish starter, traditionally served with aquavit. It is interesting to note that herring is an absolute must on the Swedish Christmas buffet or Midsummer smorgasbord. Herring is a big part of Swedish cuisine due to its abundancy in the North Atlantic.
